| Halt brain drain says Dutch minister, (Times of Zambia, 2005-04-22):-Netherlands minister of cooperation and development Agnes Ardenn has urged the Zambian Government to put in place a mechanism that will stop the brain drain and retain its quality human resource. Ms Ardenn said in an interview in Lusaka that it was regrettable that other countries were benefiting from the human resource on which Zambia had spent a lot on money especially in areas such as health. She said Zambia should lobby for the enactment of international legislature to regulate the advertisement of jobs in the media as a way of preventing the continued brain drain. “It is not fair that other countries with rich economies should benefit from the training provided by countries like Zambia from its meagre resources,” she said. She explained that the performance of various sectors of the nation was dependent on qualified human resource. She said the brain drain had reached alarming proportions in Zambia and other sub-Saharan countries and the Dutch government was against the idea as it frustrated its international policies in good governance. Ms Ardenn said the Netherlands was involved in several fellowships for Zambians but ensured that they returned home after obtaining their education so they could benefit their country. She said support would also be given to the training of other professionals such as nurses and teachers to increase capacity in service delivery. | |
