| Foreign contractors squeezed, (Times of Zambia, 2005-04-04):-The National Council of Construction (NCC) says that it is now illegal for foreign construction consultants and contractors to conduct business in Zambia for work which can be done by locals. NCC says that only in instances where there were no capable Zambian consultants and contractors will the NCC allow foreign companies to carry out such works.According to NCC’s latest edition of Construction News obtained in Lusaka at the weekend, the NCC Act however, encourages foreign construction firms to go into joint ventures with Zambian firms as a way of building local construction capacities. NCC has since asked firms to clearly indicate on the registration/affiliation forms the nationality of their shareholders. It states that under the NCC Act only NCC has the mandate to give permission to foreign companies to carry works in Zambia. Meanwhile, NCC has finally started registering all construction contractors countrywide. NCC also says that the transferring/ inclusion of the construction school under the NCC was done after realising the need to address the problem with the local contractors failing to perform. The Construction News states that the construction school was therefore meant to train and re-train the local contractors. It, however, states that NCC has no intention of competing with the existing construction based training institution. | |
