| Zimbabweans rounded up in SA, (Chronicle, 2006-04-04):-One hundred and forty Zimbabweans were at the weekend rounded up in Musina in South Africa as the blitz aimed at flushing out illegal immigrants in the neighbouring country intensifies, Chronicle has learnt. The South African Police Service spokesman for Vhembe district in Limpopo Province, Inspector Thivhulawi Tshilate, said the Zimbabweans were arrested in Musina and the surrounding farms between Saturday and Sunday. "We arrested the illegal immigrants in Musina and the surrounding farms during our intensified patrols. They had no valid travel documents, an indication that they illegally entered South Africa through undesignated entry points," Insp Tshilate said.He said the Zimbabweans would be deported into the country soon after the completion of the necessary formalities. Despite regular raids by South African police, scores of Zimbabweans continue to illegally enter the neighbouring country through undesignated entry points along the flooded and crocodileinfested Limpopo River. Recently more than 160 border jumpers were intercepted at the border by South African police after they had illegally crossed into that country aboard a goods train. Last year nearly 50 000 Zimbabweans were deported through the Beitbridge Border Post. | |
