New funeral fund for exiles in SA, (Zimbabwean, 2006-05-18):-A new organisation known as Zaffa has been founded in South Africa. This is a non-profit making organisation aiming to assist Zimbabwean exiles in funeral matters. It was founded by Zimbabwean residents in SA after consultation with all stake holders. "In our efforts to come up with an all-inclusive project, we approached farm workers who are Zimbabweans and people involved in all menial jobs that range from piece work to permanent jobs to hear their views. We also sought the views of potential well-wishers who expressed optimism that such a program would receive their backing," says a statement from the organisers. "In acknowledgement of the role currently being played by various welfare organisations we felt it necessary to inform them our intentions, which they appreciated. We really pay them tribute in their quest to alleviate the plight of our people." The key problem faced by many exiles is: Who will take care of our funeral expenses if we die here? "We have observed with both sympathy and sadness friends running away from a dead body because they have nothing with which to assist with funeral expenses. "Zaffa has therefore established a fund to be monitored and administered by professionals. Our books are open to members to see how the money is spent and it is only members who can benefit from it," say the organisers. Membership is open to all Zimbabweans in SA for a joining fee of R25 and a monthly subscription of the same amount. The group's official funeral undertaker is Mkhonza Funeral Services, headquartered in Pretoria with branches throughout the country.
