Foreign teachers in schools, (BOPA, 2006-08-24):-The number of expatriate teachers in secondary schools is 564, says assistant education minister Moggie Mbaakanyi. Mbaakanyi told Parliament that expatriates were teaching science, design and technology, art, home economics, business studies and computer studies. Mbaakanyi said expatriate teachers in secondary schools were mainly in the new subject areas where there had not been enough training of teachers. In subjects where there were enough Batswana teachers, she said, the expatriates were those who were finishing off their contracts or those with special assignments. There are 33 vacancies in 25 Boteti primary schools, 20 of these are for management positions while 13 are teacher positions, she said. In addition, she said there were 22 vacancies in secondary schools, five at Letlhakane Senior Secondary School and 17 in the six community junior secondary schools in Boteti. She was responding to a question from Boteti South MP Lebonamang Mokalake who wanted to know the number of expatriate teachers in the secondary school system, their subject speciality and the number of vacancies there were at primary, secondary school and tertiary levels.
