| Weekend blitz leads to arrests in Hillbrow, (Star, 2006-11-13):-Detectives and crime-prevention officials swamped Hillbrow from Friday night until the early hours of this morning, making 383 arrests. While some of the arrests were for relatively minor offences like loitering, detectives arrested 46 suspects on existing dockets in relation to negligent driving, assault, intimidation, robbery, attempted murder and murder. Crime-prevention teams made a further 307 arrests over the weekend. "This is the kind of thing we are dealing with all the time and it's already starting to increase before Christmas. So we are taking a zero-tolerance approach and plan to put all these buggers behind bars," said Hillbrow police spokesperson Inspector Kriban Naidoo. He said Home Affairs officials had accompanied the police and helped with the arrest of 57 suspected illegal immigrants. A further 30 arrests were made after people checked on the SAPS Morpho Touch system - the computerised database of fingerprints - came out as positively linked to crimes in other areas. Naidoo said some of the crimes to which arrestees were linked included reckless and negligent driving, assault, fraud, housebreaking and theft, and attempted murder. | |
