| Ethiopians Arrested, (The Herald, 2007-01-13):-Police in Beitbridge have intercepted 23 Ethiopians who were attempting to illegally cross into South Africa. The police spokesman for Matabeleland South province, Assistant Inspector Trust Ndlovu, said the Ethiopians were arrested on Wednesday night at the border post. "The 23 Ethiopians were arrested by our officers who were patrolling the Beitbridge border post," he said. Asst Insp Ndlovu said they had since started investigations into the matter. They are detained at the Beitbridge Police Station as police investigations continue. "We will soon hand them (Ethiopians) over to the Department of Immigration for repatriation soon after the completion of our investigations," said the police spokesman. Recently, a total of 42 Somalis were intercepted at Dulibadzimu Gorge along the Limpopo River while trying to enter SA through undesignated crossing points. The Somali refugees had allegedly vanished from a refugee camp while the Government was still processing their documents. Of late there has been an upsurge in the number of both locals and foreigners crossing into South Africa using undesignated crossing points along the crocodile-infested Limpopo River. | |
