Southern African Research Centre

The Southern African Research Centre (SARC) is a focal point within Canada for research and international development programmes focused on the SADC region. The overall aim of SARC is to contribute to regional cooperation and development in Southern Africa through basic research, training and capacity building, the delivery of Canadian expertise and policy inputs; and the planning and development of academic and applied research and development projects.

Core activities of the Centre include the management of several large policy and research-oriented projects; advanced training of graduate students and junior faculty from or working on the SADC region; organisation of workshops and conferences in areas within the Centre's mandate; project management, evaluation and other services; and the fostering of new Canadian partnerships with like centres, organizations and agencies in Africa, Europe and North America.

The Centre's programming focus is dynamic, reflecting the expertise of faculty currently at Queen's. Current areas of interest include:

• international migration and immigration policy;
• municipal service delivery and privatization;
• regional intergration, industrial policy and trade;
• environment and social policy;
• urban food security;
• labour studies;
• women and health;
• evaluation of HIV/AIDS interventions;
• democracy, human rights and xenophobia
