A. Charles Baillie
Charles Baillie was appointed 12th Chancellor of Queen's University on
July 1, 2002. He continues the tradition of excellence in the
Chancellorship: he is one of the most noted businessmen in Canada. As
former Chairman and CEO of TD Bank Financial Group, his leadership
skills brought wide renown to himself and notable successes to the
company. Charles Baillie is also a strong public supporter of
postsecondary education, and has made his views clear on the need for
our society to invest in education.
Charles Baillie grew up in Orillia, Ontario, and attended Trinity
College at the University of Toronto, where he studied Honours Political
Science and Economics. He graduated with a B.A. in 1962, and then moved
on to Harvard for graduate studies. Baillie earned his M.B.A. from
Harvard's School of Business Administration, and then entered into a
highly successful career in finance. He is Honourary Chair of the
Canadian Council of Chief Executives.
In addition to his business interests, Charles Baillie has always been
active in his community. He was the Chair of the United Way of Greater
Toronto Campaign 2000 and is Campaign Co-Chair for the Nature
Conservancy and Honourary Campaign Chair of the Shaw Festival. In
addition, Mr. Baillie serves as President of The Art Gallery of
Ontario.
Charles Baillie's ties with Queen's are strong: all four of his
children are Queen's graduates, and he recently established the Baillie
Family Chair in Conservation Biology. This donation reflects one of his
personal interests: he is an avid birdwatcher and outdoorsman. He is
also a history buff who enjoys collecting antiquarian books.
