Sapientia et Doctrina Stabilitas
"Wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times" is Queen's motto, translated from the Latin. Stability is treasured by a university that throughout its first half century was beset by financial crises and faced the specter of amalgamation with the University of Toronto. It was the perseverance of dedicated people that enabled the university to evolve from a Presbyterian theological college to a more diverse educational institution meant to serve Eastern Ontario, to a national university with an international scope.
Confronted with the death of Principal William Leitch in 1864, the Board of Trustees prayed for "the comfort and consolation of Him who, in His good providence has removed [Leitch] to shine in a higher sphere." In the intervening century and a half, many people have shone for Queen's. The graves of Queen's people in Cataraqui Cemetery serve as reminders of what each individual accomplished before his or her earthly flame was extinquished.
This website is an attempt to compile a record of people from the university community that are interred in Cataraqui Cemetery but it is by no means complete. Many names have become obscure in over one hundred and fifty years of Queen's history. Therefore, if you are aware of any Queen's person who is buried in Cataraqui Cemetery but is not included here, please take the time to send us your comments and suggestions.
