Policy on Commemoration Day

On December 6, 1989, fourteen female engineering students were murdered in the Montreal Massacre at Ecole Polytechnique. At the October 25, 1990 meeting, Senate agreed to endorse recognition by the University of December 6 as a day of commemoration. Each Faculty and School is encouraged to support the day of remembrance in ways deemed appropriate. Moreover, all academic activities, including tests, examinations, mandatory exercises (including due-dates) and classes will be suspended for that day with the exception of clinical responsibilities and field work. This date is to be included in all faculty sessional dates. When December 6th falls within the examination period, the exam period shall be extended by one day.

This matter was reviewed during the 2000-2001 academic year and the following Senate motion was approved April 19, 2001.

• that the non-academic status of December 6 be extended indefinitely subject to referral and review by SCAP only upon a motion by Senate;

• that all academic activity with the exception of clinical and field work be cancelled on December 6;

• that the AMS and the University Advisor on Equity be responsible for the co-ordination of memorial activities planned for December 6;

• that when December 6 falls within the examination period, the exam period will be extended by one day; and

• that December 6 be included in faculty sessional dates as Commemoration Day.
