About $16.89 million invested by the Ontario Government in support of this program is aimed at developing partnerships between researchers and industry through the supply of grants that fund graduate student and post-doctoral internships of four, eight or in some cases 12-month durations.
The application process is simple. A faculty member with an industry partner and a trainee submit a three-page application and the trainee's CV for consideration by internal and external review boards. This process is usually complete within 4 to 6 weeks following submission, which can occur at any time.
A total of 250 internships are available in 2008, 400 in 2009 and 600 in 2010 and the approval rate of submissions received to date is 98 percent.
Awards are in the amount of $15,000 of which $7,500 comes from the industry partner and a minimum of $10,000 is paid to the trainee as a research stipend. The remaining $5,000 covers research related costs which may include the trainee's travel and accommodation costs if the industry partner is not local. Of note is that the portion of the $5,000 budgeted for travel may be eligible for matching by MITACs.
