SOAR - Summer Orientation to Academics & Resources (JULY 4-9)

SOAR at Queen's this July!  The Summer Orientation to Academics and Resources (SOAR) is a one-day program designed to help ease the transition of our incoming first-year students and their families.  Information sessions, as well as opportunities to connect with upper-year students, faculty and staff, will help prepare students for new academic expectations, address questions and fears, and introduce on-campus resouces and support services.  Registration is now open!  Visit http://queensu.ca/seo/orientation/soar.html.

Orientation Week  (Week of SEPT 2, 2013)

This exciting week is designed to introduce students to campus life, give them an opportunity to meet other students and settle into residence life!

HLTH Students

First-year students participate in the Arts and Science Orientation for incoming frosh.

BPHE (Honours) and BSCH KINE frosh will also have the opportunity to participate in orientation activities through the PHE/KIN Orientation program.  Students will receive a complete handbook in the mail.  As well, information about orientation activities will be posted below as it becomes available.

Registration in your first-year courses will occur during the summer of 2012 and information on this process will be posted on the Faculty of Arts & Science New Students website.

Review Registration - Timetable Information for the key dates for registration. In this section you'll find some helpful tools.

  • Registration Timelines [PDF] for 2013-14. This is a summary list of all the important deadlines for registration that SKHS students print off and use as their "to-do" list.
  • Registration Worksheet [PDF] for 2013-14.  This is a handy worksheet to help you organize your course selection before going onto QCARD to select your courses.
  • The SKHS Draft Timetable for was posted in March 2013 on the website. This documents all the courses offered through the SKHS. Each course has: a hyperlink to a course summary that has more in-depth information than available in the Arts & Science Calendar informs you if the course acts as a prerequisite (leads to) an upper-year course; the term the course is offered; the professor of the course; etc.!
  • A link to the official Course Timetable which will be posted on June 17, 2013 is also provided. Note that this is where you find out the exact times and locations of your classes.

Health Studies

All Health Studies programs require HLTH 101/3.0, [PDF] HLTH 102/3.0 [PDF] and PSYC 100/6.0.  Please select these courses on SOLUS and take all in 2013-14

Progressing into YR2 of a HLTH program will be based on the  average obtained in HLTH 101/3.0 and your cumulative grade point average. For specific details go to the HLTH Progressing into YR2 website. 

Students should familiarize themselves with the following HLTH programs found on the Tracking Your Progress Through Your Program for HLTH students:

  • MAJOR: HLTH-M-MAJ 2013-14
  • MEDIAL: HLTH-A-BAH 2013-14
  • MINOR: HLTH-G-BA 2013-14

Kinesiology

All Kinesiology students will take HLTH 101/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 125/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 153/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 167/3.0 [PDF] and PSYC 100/6.0 in first year. These courses will automatically added to QCARD for KINE students. In addition to these courses, students in first year are advised to add 12.0 course units from the Natural and Physical Sciences for themselves on QCARD

Physical and Health Education

All Physical and Health Education students will take HLTH 101/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 125/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 153/3.0, [PDF] KNPE 167/3.0 [PDF], PSYC 100/6.0, PACT P01/0.0 [PDF] and PACT 100/3.0 [PDF] in first year. These courses will be automatically added to QCARD for PHED students. In addition to these courses, students in first year are advised to add 9.0 elective course units for themselves on QCARD.

NOTE: If students are planning to become teachers, they should select these electives so that they have a second teachable (see the Instruction Booklet posted on the OUAC site under Teacher Education Application Service).
