David Lyon
Queen's Research Chair in Sociology,

2007 Killam Research Fellow, and
Director of the Surveillance Project

My interest in internet studies stems from a long-term project of trying to understand the technological aspects of social transformation. This began with the critique of information society theories (The Silicon Society, 1985; The Information Society: Issues and Illusions, 1988), continued with a wide-ranging study of mainly computer-assisted surveillance including the use of the internet for processing personal data (The Electronic Eye, 1994; Surveillance Society, 2001; Surveillance after September 11, 2003), and is currently pursued a forthcoming book on Cyberspace, (2004), on the social and cultural creation and consequences of the internet.
