Queen's University

Department of Sociology

Sylvia Bawa - Finalist in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition

Congratulations to Sylvia Bawa - PhD candidate, in the Department of Sociology.  Sylvia participated as a finalist in the School of Graduate Studies' three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition held on April 30th.

In order to reach the finals in the 3MT competition, competitors had to win a top spot in an earlier heat against strong competition with other graduate students across the university.  Three heats of approximately 20 students each were held throughout the month of April, culminating in nine students going on to the Final.  The 3MT final received media attention (CKWS and Whig Standard), recognition from our sister institutions who have subsequently launched their own competitions, and community involvement encouraged through panel of judges (Daniel Woolf, Bhavana Varma - CEO, United Way and Peter Milliken - Former Speaker of the House of Commons, now a Fellow at Queen's School of Policy Studies).  Peter Milliken summarized the value of the competition in his interview with CKWS stating that the 3MT Final was an excellent opportunity for Queen's to showcase its research to a wider public in a way that captures the impact of the research while making it accessible to a general audience - a challenging exercise in communication skills.
