Cross-appointed with Gender Studies
Chair of Graduate Studies
Annette Burfoot has been with the Department since 1989. She teaches the sociology of science and technology (with special attention to reproductive, genetic, and communication technologies). She also teaches cultural studies and is particularly interested in the culture of science and technology. She is cross-listed with Gender Studies and also teaches contemporary feminist theory. Her research interests include political cultures of science and technology, reproductive and genetic engineering, and theories of feminism and cultural studies. She is currently investigating 18th century wax anatomical models alongside theories of materialism, cross-cultural medical treatments of pain, and women and technology in terms of do-it-yourself trends.
