Continuous LearningGovernment's Policy Toolkit:
A 21st Century Update

Professional Development for Public Servants

November 8, 2010

What this workshop is about

This workshop will expose participants to current thinking about how to develop the right fit policy options in an increasingly complex world. Understanding the range of policy instruments is essential to providing good analysis and advice. Knowing how those instruments interact and what it takes to actually implement them is at the heart of providing good advice on instrument choice.

This one-day workshop will bring participants up to date with current theory and practice, let them explore, through a case approach, how to identify and develop appropriate instrument options and share the experience of others.

Who should attend

Policy is not a solo sport. Virtually everyone engaged in formulating and delivering government policies and services will have an interest in this workshop. The workshop is directed to those who are involved in policy analysis, advice and delivery, as well as those who manage and deliver policy decisions.

What you will learn

  • the range of instruments in the government policy toolkit
  • the interplay of new developments, such as social networking, with traditional delivery means
  • how to think more broadly with respect to instrument choice, and
  • how to think in a more integrated way (linking policy goal, options for delivery, effectiveness, costs and realistic notions of delivery) about ultimate advice and recommendations
