Three Tears for Democracy

Friday, February 7, 2014

OpEd by Ambassador (R) Louis A. Delvoie comments on the findings of the continuing declining trend detailed in the "Freedom in the World" report, in Friday's Kingston Whig Standard.

"There is an old saying to the effect that human beings are creatures of habit. There may well be a certain amount of truth to this. The sheer repetition of events to which we have become accustomed seems to imply that the world is unfolding as it should. Early in the year we seem to derive some satisfaction from Groundhog Day and St. Valentine’s Day, and for many of us life would not be complete without the Super Bowl or the Academy Awards ceremonies.

There are, however, yearly events which can prove less reassuring. Among these is the publication of an annual report entitled “Freedom in the World.” The latest edition, which appeared last month, makes for rather depressing reading."
