Baron Alderdice of Knock in the city of Belfast

Dr. John Alderdice, Baron Alderdice of Knock in the City of Belfast is a psychiatrist and former professor at Queen's University Belfast. He entered Northern Ireland politics during turbulent times and became leader of the non-sectarian Alliance Party in 1987.

Lord Alderdice was an architect and key player in the Northern Ireland Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998 and was subsequently elected the first Speaker of the new Northern Ireland Assembly in recognition of his role in promoting reconciliation, democracy and resolution.

Lord Alderdice now heads the Centre for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict at Oxford University. His writings on cooperation and peace in Ireland have been widely read and he is currently focused on the conflict in the Middle East.

Lord Alderdice will be receiving an Honourary Degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario,  on June 5, 2017
