Research/teaching: how interpersonal workplace context affects both employee well-being and performance outcomes, human service organizations, relational and intrapersonal processes that enable people to do high-quality work in impoverished or challenging conditions, organizational theory and design, management in health care.

Jacoba Lilius joined the School of Policy Studies in 2006 after receiving her Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan, and holds a cross-appointment in the Queen’s School of Business. Dr. Lilius teaches Master’s level courses in Organizational Theory and Health Care Management in the Master of Industrial Relations (MIR), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Professional Master of Industrial Relations (PMIR) programs. She also serves as the faculty advisor for Policy Pro Bono, a for-credit community placement program for MPA and MIR students. Through this program, students are matched up with community organizations to provide services in their developing areas of expertise, such as research, policy review and development, and overall institutional analysis.

Dr. Lilius is currently engaged on a SSHRC-funded research program to examine the within-workday mechanisms through which people manage and recover from the demands of their work, with a particular focus on caregiving occupations. She is also part of a research team called the Compassion Lab (www.compassionlab.com) whose research focuses on the nature and impact of compassion in work organizations. Her published work includes articles in Administrative Science Quarterly, Harvard Business Review, Human Relations, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and American Behavioral Scientist, as well as book chapters in the Handbook of Organizational Studies and the Handbook of Positive Organizational Scholarship.
