Faculty of Law Admission Bursary Application

• Faculty of Law Admission Bursaries are non-repayable grants. Financial need is the primary consideration in the selection of bursary recipients
• Please note: assessment of eligibility for Faculty of Law Admission Bursaries is independent of your assessment for admission to the Faculty of Law

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Faculty of Law Admission Bursary, a student must:

• Be entering full-time studies in the first year of an undergraduate degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University in September
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
• Demonstrate financial need*
• Be accessing government student aid for their first year of studies in the Faculty of Law**
• Have prior accumulated government student financial debt**

* Demonstrated financial need is based on, but not restricted to the following factors:

• Student and family (if applicable) income
• Number of dependants in family (if applicable)
• Applicant's assets (including savings)
• The full cost of the program of studies, books and supplies, and basic living expenses

Students must take advantage of assistance from other sources such as government student aid and/or a student line of credit.

** As part of the consideration for a Faculty of Law Admission Bursary there is an emphasis on assisting those students who have and continue to demonstrate need over and above the maximum funding available through government student aid. Therefore, it is expected that students who have prior accumulated government student financial debt are demonstrating a higher level of financial need. Entering JD students who do not have prior government student financial aid loan debt from previous studies will not be considered for bursary assistance. Additionally, student's with a small amount of prior government student financial debt may not qualify for Law Admission Bursary assistance.

Notification

Only successful applicants will be notified. If your application for the Law Admission Bursary program has been submitted, we will make every effort to ensure that applicants who have submitted will receive their bursary offer at the time they are offered admission to the Faculty of Law.

By submitting a Faculty of Law Admission Bursary application, you will also be automatically assessed for the named Faculty of Law admission bursaries.

There is no separate application for these awards.

The following bursaries and awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.

Professor Arthur Cockfield Memorial Award in Law 

Established in November 2023 by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Professor Arthur Cockfield, LLB 1993. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a J.D. or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

Madison Crich Memorial Award

Established in June 2017 in memory of Madison Anne Crich by her parents, Terry and Martha and her classmates in the Classes of Law 2016 and 2017. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and involvement in community activities to students entering the JD or combined JD program in the Faculty of Law.

Fred Delaney's Last Pro Bono Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with Undergraduate Admission Bursaries, Commerce.

Eric Hoaken Memorial Bursary in Law

Established in September 2019 by Lax O'Sullivan Lisus Gottlieb LLP in memory of their wonderful friend and partner, Eric Hoaken, LLB 1992, BA (Hons) 1988. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of the JD program or combined JD degree program in the Faculty of Law. 

Immigration and Citizenship Law Bursary

Established in October 2020 and revised in March 2021 by Queen’s Faculty of Law. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to full-time students entering the Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law. Applications are available on the Student Awards website. Applications will be accepted up to the program application date for each program intake. Apply for the Immigration and Citizenship Law Bursary.

Queen's LSS Indigenous Entrance Award

Established in May 2016 by Queen's Law Students' Society.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering first year of the J.D. program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. First preference will be given to students who have applied in the Indigenous Category.  Second preference will be given to students who have applied through the Access Category. Selection will be made by the Office of the University Registrar, Student Awards, in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Students of the Faculty of Law.

Waterloo Region Law Association - Catherine Malvern Award

Established in October 2005 by the Waterloo Regional Law Association and re-named in September 2017 in honour of the Association's retired Director, Catherine Malvern. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and a record of community service to students entering the J.D. or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to students who, at the time of admission to Queen's University, were residents of the Kitchener, Waterloo Cambridge region.

Apply for the General Bursary – Available to all Queen’s Students

Law students will automatically be assessed for the Faculty of Law student named bursaries by submitting a Queen's General Bursary application. Please note: only the name of the award will change after a student has been selected; the value of their bursary will not change depending on the name of the award. 

There is no separate application for these awards.

Gordon and Kathryn Baker Bursary

Established by Gordon R. Baker, QC, LL.B. 1970 and Kathryn Baker, B.Ed. 1969 and awarded to students in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

Bala Family Law Bursary

Established in December 2013 by the Bala Family and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of the J.D. program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.  Preference will be given to students with an interest in family law.

Andrea Battersby and Karim Ali Radwan Memorial Bursary

Established in October 2002 and revised in November 2016 by family and friends in memory of Andrea Battersby, B.A. 1999, LL.B. 2001, and her son, Karim Ali Radwan. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to female students in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students who are single parents with secondary preference to those whose child is physically or developmentally challenged.

Douglas Cardinal Bursary

Established in March 2018 by David Sharpe, a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte community and an LL.B. graduate of Queen's University in 1995, in honour of Douglas Cardinal, LL.D. 2018.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to Indigenous law students in any year of the J.D. or combined J.D. degree programs in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University.

Professor Arthur Cockfield Memorial Award in Law 

Established in November 2023 by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Professor Arthur Cockfield, LLB 1993. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a J.D. or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by October 31. 

Dennis Cole Memorial Bursary

Established in May 2001 by friends and family in memory of Dennis Cole, B.A. 1959, LL.B. 1962, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the first year of the Bachelor of Law program.

Criminal Lawyers' Association Award

Established in December 2008 by the Criminal Lawyers' Association and awarded to a student in the third year of the Faculty of Law on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and interest in criminal law.

Faculty of Law Bursary

Established in May 2001 from donations and awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need.

David Farrell Law '64 Award

Established and funded by the class of Law '64, this award is made annually to a second or third year law student, on the basis of overall scholarship, financial need and contribution to the Faculty, the University and the wider community. Applicants should submit a bursary application along with a letter outlining the above to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards).

Harold G. Fox Bursary

A sum of money is available for distribution each year to law students as bursary assistance, and is awarded on the basis of need. The money is distributed by the fund established in memory of the late Harold G. Fox, Q.C., a member of the Bar of Ontario.

Cecil Allan Fraser Bursary

Established in June 2020 by the Black Law Student's Association ("BLSA") Queen's Chapter and the Queen's Pre-Law Society in memory of Cecil Allan Fraser, B.A. 1958, LL.B. 1961, the first Black student and graduate of Queen's University Law. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in any year of the JD degree program or a combined JD degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University. Awarded in the following order of priority to: (1) Black Canadian students (2) Visible minority/Racialized students.

Law 1967 Bursary 

Established in April 2023 by the Class of Law 1967 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of the J.D. program or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. 

Vic Freidin, Law '71 Memorial Award

Established in September 2017 by the Class of Law 1971 in memory of Victor Freidin, LLB 1971. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and demonstrated interest in advocacy to students in any year of the J.D. or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law.

Rebecca Gotlieb Memorial Award 

Established in April 2004 by Allan Gotlieb in memory of his daughter, Rebecca Gotlieb, B.A. '80, LL.B. '83, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to a student in the Faculty of Law enrolled in the four-year MPA/LL.B. Co-operative Combined Degree Program offered by the School of Policy Studies and the Faculty of Law at Queens University. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in health law and policy. 

Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP Bursary

Established in March 1998 and revised in May 2017 by Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in a J.D. program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.

Horace's Father Bursary 

Established in October 2011 in honour of the father of the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus, known in the English-speaking world as Horace. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students who are Canadian citizens in any year of the J.D. program at Queen’s Faculty of Law.

Horgan Family Award in Law

Established in April 2014 by Michael and Mary Ellen Horgan, in honour of their daughter, Deirdre Horgan MacLeod, B.A.(Hons) 1999, LLB 2004, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year in the Faculty of Law.

Denny Hunter Pollock Bursary

Established in March 1995 by Denny Hunter Pollock, LL.B. 1995, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student enrolled in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a sole support parent of at least one child under the age of thirteen.

Law '65 Bursary

Established by the class of Law '65 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a resident of Ontario.

Law 1972 Award

Established in October 2020 by the Class of Law 1972 in honour of their 50th reunion in 2022. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a J.D. program or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. 

Law '76 Bursary

Established by the class of Law '76 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law who is a resident of Ontario.

Law 1977 Memorial Award 

Established in December 2003 by members of the Class of Law 1977 in memory of classmates. Last revised in February 2021. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in extra-curricular activities to students in any year of a JD program or combined JD program in the Faculty of Law.

Law 1982 Bursary

Established in November 2021 by the Class of Law 1982, with a lead gift from James Kofman, BCom 1978, Law 1982, in honour of their 40th reunion in 2022. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or combined J.D. degree program in Queen's Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to Indigenous students. 

Law 1985 Award

Established in May 2016 by the Class of Law 1985 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and demonstrated participation in Queen's Law Clinics to students in any year of the J.D. program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.

Law 1986 Bursary

Established in September 2018 by the Class of Law 1986 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.

Law 1989 - Halldor K. Bjarnason Bursary

Established in November 2021 by Halldor Bjarnason and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University. Preference will be granted in priority order to: (1) students with disabilities; (2) students who are single parents.

Law 1991

Established in March 2022 by the Class of Law 1991 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.

Law '97 Bursary 

Established by members of the class of Law 1997 and awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of the Faculty of Law who demonstrate participation in extra-curricular activities such as, but not limited to, intramurals, Law Revue and Law Games.

Law Society Foundation Bursary Fund 

A sum of money is available for distribution each year to law students as bursary assistance, and is awarded on the basis of need. The money is contributed by members of the Law Society of Upper Canada to assist law students in the Province of Ontario.

Law Society of Upper Canada Education Equity Award

Established in November 2016 by the Law Society of Upper Canada and LexisNexis Canada Inc. Last revised in June 2021. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in the second or third year of the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University who are members of a Visible Minority/Racialized group, Indigenous persons, persons with a Disability or 2SLGBTQ+ students, and have demonstrated commitment to their communities.

Law Students' Society Community Bursary

Established by the Law Students' Society and awarded to a law student(s) on the basis of financial need who has demonstrated a contribution to the law school, university, or wider community and/or overcome obstacles and disadvantage in pursuing a legal education. Applicants should submit a bursary application along with a letter outlining the above to the Associate University Registrar (Student Awards).

Law ThankQ Bursary

Established in October 2005 by the Class of Law 2003 with additional contributions from the Class of Law 2004 and 2005 and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of studies in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University.

Daniel Mark Advocacy Award in Law

Established in May 2015 by family and friends in memory Daniel Mark, L.L.B. 1989. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and demonstrated advocacy or public service, to students in any year of the J.D. program or a combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to upper year students.

DP Martin Family Foundation Bursary   

Established in March 2017 by The DP Martin Foundation and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in the J.D. program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students with dependents under the age of majority.

Mitchell Bursary   

Established in September 2007 from the estate of Eileen Mitchell Thomas, QC, B.A. 1937, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to a female student. Preference will be given to a student whose address on admission to Queen's University was Northern Ontario (including the City of Ottawa).

Mary Alice Murray Memorial Bursary   

The Mary Alice Murray Memorial Bursary Fund was established by friends, associates and Queen's Law School alumni, to honour Miss Mary Alice Murray (Law '60). The fund provides a sum of money for annual distribution to J.D. students, to be awarded based upon an assessment of financial need.

D. John Naccarato Memorial Award in Law 

Established in October 2021 by Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP in memory of a friend, colleague and senior partner, John Naccarato, Law ‘81. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University.  

Alf Peneycad Bursary

Established in April 2006 to honour Alf Peneycad, Law 1970, named the National Post - ZSA 2005 Canadian General Counsel of the Year, and awarded on the basis of financial need to full-time second or third year students enrolled in the Faculty of Law.

Plumley Family Award in Law

Plumley Family Award in Law - Established by Kent Plumley, B.Sc.(Eng.) 1960, LL.B. 1963, and Sandra Plumley, B.A. 1966, and awarded on the basis of financial need to a student in any year of the Faculty of Law.

Queen's Faculty of Law Bursary    

Established in September 2017 by alumni and friends of Queen's Faculty of Law and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a J.D. or combined J.D. program in Queen's Faculty of Law.

Queen's Law Alumni Bursary    

Established by the Faculty of Law from donations by alumni, law firms, and corporations, and awarded on the basis of financial need to students registered in any year in the Faculty of Law.

Res Ipsa Loquitur Bursary    

Established in October 2002 by Professor Jim MacIntyre, a Queen's faculty member from 1959 to 1964, to honour the remembrance of the Res Ipsa Loquitur Boarding house which played a significant role in the lives of many law students and faculty members during the 1960's. Awarded on the basis of financial need to students in any year of the Faculty of Law.

David Warren Rutherford Bursary

Established by the family of the late David Warren Rutherford (Law '81), awarded annually to a third-year law student on the basis of academic standing and financial need.

Samuel Springer Scholarship

Awards are made annually to a second year law student of high academic standing, who is a resident of Canada and who has shown financial need.

Donald J. Travers Award 

Established in June 2022 by Donald J. Travers, BA 1969, LLB 1972, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and involvement in community service to students in any year of a J.D. degree program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. 

Douglas Traill Memorial Bursary    

Established by the class of Law '76 in memory of the late Douglas Melvin Traill, B.A. '7 (UBC), LL.B. '76, awarded on the basis of financial need.

H. Reginald Watson Award 

Established in October 2005 by the founding members of V-CC, a Research and Development company, in honour of H. Reginald Watson, LL.B 1981. Awarded to a student in the Faculty of Law on the basis of financial need and demonstrated interest and commitment to community service.

To be considered for these scholarships, a student must apply with:

• A cover letter addressing how you meet the criteria of the scholarship
• A resume or curriculum vitae
• Additional documentation requested in the award description (e.g. letter of reference)

Each award has a unique set of criteria and deadlines.

• Students are welcome to apply for more than one award; however, a separate application must be submitted for each award
• Please pay close attention to the application instructions and deadlines

Students will be notified by either the Student Awards Office or their faculty if they have been selected for an award.

Blakes Scholar Award

Established in March 2000 by the law firm of Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and community involvement, extra-curricular activities, or other personal accomplishments. Additional selection criteria may also include past experience and present contributions which promote or enhance diversity within the law school or broader community. The award is renewable in the third-year of J.D. studies provided that the student maintains excellent academic standing in their second-year of J.D. studies at full course load. Selection will by the Faculty of Law Awards Committee. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Applications should be submitted to  the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Borden Ladner Gervais Professional Excellence Award

Established in April 2007 by Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and commitment to professional excellence as demonstrated by community service and teamwork to a student entering the second year in the Faculty of Law. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Applications should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Community Commitment Award

Established in January 2001 from funds from the Law Foundation of Ontario special endowment to the Faculty of Law at Queen's, to up to eight (8) graduating students each year who have demonstrated interest in and commitment to public or community service. Preference will be given to those students who upon graduation will be engaged in public interest or community service legal work with a projected yearly salary of less than $30,000, and who will not receive tuition or salary payments for completing the Bar Admission Course. Consideration will also be given to students who upon graduation will be articling with a firm or organization with a projected yearly salary of less than $30,000 and who will not receive tuition or salary payments for completing the Bar Admission Course. Application is made by letter with accompanying resume to the Dean of the Faculty of Law, and should include corroborating documentation from the employer. Deadline for application is 1 May in the year of graduation.

Dean's Key

Established in March 2007 by the Faculty of Law in celebration of its 50th anniversary and awarded annually to a maximum of two graduating students who best embody the proud traditions and signature values of Queen's Law: community, collegiality, professionalism, service, exemplary commitment and responsibility towards legal studies, and academic achievement (minimum cumulative B average in the J.D. program). Selection will be made by the Dean, Associate Dean and Assistant Deans of the Faculty of law on the basis of a written nomination from a member of the Queen's Law community, supported by the nominee's resume and a letter of reference. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Dentons Canada LLP Award

The Dentons Canada LLP Award is a gift of that law firm to be awarded annually to a student in second year who submits what is judged to be the best substantial paper during that academic year.

Faculty of Law Dean's Council Diversity Awards

Established in November 2003 by the Faculty of Law Dean's Council. Three awards will be available annually to students in any year of studies in the Faculty of Law whose past experience enables them to bring a greater diversity to the complement of students in the Faculty of Law and ultimately to the practice of law. Students must demonstrate a substantial contribution to diversity related issues either in law school or prior to attending law school. Notice of application will be announced mid-March and should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin Mooting Award

Established in December 2005 by Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP to provide an award to recognize and honour a Queen's Law student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Queen's Law Moot Program. Nominees may have fulfilled various roles in the Moot Program including, but not limited to, competitive moot team member, coach, student member of Moot Court Committee, organizer, or researcher. To be considered, participants, students and professors in the Moot Program may submit the names of nominees to the Moot Program Award Committee by 15 March. Selection will be made by the Moot Program Award Committee.

Law 1965 Award

Established in April 2012 by the Class of Law 1965, and awarded on the basis of academic achievement and participation in Faculty and University governance, student government, athletics, other extracurricular activities and participation in community projects both legal and non-legal. Awarded to students registered in first year in the J.D. program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Law Public-Interest Internship Awards

Established in December 2013 by the Faculty of Law and awarded to Queen's J.D. or combined J.D. program students on the basis of academic achievement. Applications will be evaluated on the degree to which the proposed internship will enhance the intern's legal knowledge and skills, and the contributions the internship will make to the organization's work in the public interest and/or to access to justice. Awards will be granted only to students who have confirmed a placement to study or work as a public-interest intern. To remain eligible for the funding the student must complete the internship and return to Queen's Law in the next academic term; otherwise, the funding must be repaid. Selection will be by the Awards Committee in the Faculty of Law. Applications to be submitted to the Faculty of Law by 15 March.

Agnes Lefas Memorial Scholarship

Established in October 2002 by friends and colleagues in memory of Agnes Lefas, LL.B. 1979, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student in the Queen's Faculty of Law with a demonstrated interest in civil law or the study of international business law in common and civil law jurisdictions, including (a) a student taking a civil law course in any year of their J.D. program at Queen's Faculty of Law, or (b) a student enrolled at Queen's Faculty of Law in the Civil Law/Common Law joint degree program, or (c) a student in the LL.M. program at Queen's Faculty of Law with a study/research focus on areas related to civil law, including private international law.  Notice of application will be announced mid-March and should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

C. Douglas MacLeod Memorial Scholarship

The C. Douglas MacLeod Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student completing the second year of the J.D. program. The scholarship recipient will be selected based upon general scholastic achievement with particular emphasis on outstanding performance in courses on constitutional and administrative law. Equal consideration shall also be given to the candidates' other contributions to the Faculty of Law and the University such as participation in Faculty and University governance, student government, athletics, other extracurricular activities and participation in community projects both legal and non-legal. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Doug MacLeod who was a scholar, athlete and eclectic participant in all school matters through his years at Queen's, the London School of Economics and as a teacher at Dalhousie University. Doug was also recognized as one of the pre-eminent transportation law counsel in Canada, and was the founding President of the Canadian Transportation Lawyers Association. Notice of application will be announced mid-March and should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Michelle McKelvey Award in Family Law

Established in October 2014 by family and friends in memory of Michelle McKelvey, Law 2007.  Awarded on the basis of academic achievement in family law, involvement in school or community activities, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice, to an upper year student in the J.D. program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Chief Justice McRuer Essay Prize in Constitutional Law

Established by The Honourable James C. McRuer. To be awarded annually to the law student who submits what is judged to be the best major essay in the subject area of Constitutional Law.

Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP Scholarship

Established in October 2006 and last revised in March 2018 by the law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence as well as a demonstrated commitment to teamwork as evidenced by interactions with Faculty and fellow students to a student entering second year of a J.D. or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Vincent Principi Memorial Award in Labour Law

Established in March 1994 by the family of Vincent Principi, and awarded annually to a graduating student for demonstrated skill and proficiency in one or more courses in labour law, coupled with involvement in extra-curricular activities, such as community service or participation in the Queen's Labour Law Students' Society. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Applications should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Queen's L.S.S. Criminal Law Club Award

Established in May 1996, and revised in May 2017, by the Queen's L.S.S. Criminal Law Club to honour the contributions made to the field of criminal justice by Professor Don Stuart. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a graduating J.D. student in the Faculty of Law, who has demonstrated a keen interest in the field of criminal justice through the completion of three or more courses relating to the study of criminal law.  Consideration will be given for involvement in the Queen's Prison Law Clinic, Queen's Legal Aid or the Mooting Program. Preference may be given to a student who does not hold another prize for that academic year.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Susan J. Serena Scholarship

Established in October 2003 by Susan J. Serena, LL.B. '79, and awarded annually to a student or students completing second year law, on the basis of overall scholarship, involvement in student activities and contribution to the faculty, the university and the wider community. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Eric Swan Memorial Scholarship

Established in October 2018 by the Class of Law 1994, friends and family, in memory of Eric Swan, B.A. 1987, B.A.(Hons.) 1988, LL.B. 1994. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated contribution to the Queen's Law Community through artistic expression, including but not limited to: music, drama, and visual arts, to students in their final year of the J.D. or combined J.D. degree programs in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University. Notice of application will be announced mid-March and should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Torkin Manes LLP Award

Established in May 2003 and last revised in March 2017 by the law firm of Torkin Manes LLP and awarded to a third-year student in the Faculty of Law at graduation on the basis of academic excellence and proven commitment to community service. Notice of application will be announced by the end of March. Nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Law Awards Committee by 30 April.

Torys Public Interest Summer Internship Award

Established in September 2007 by Torys and granted to first-year students in the Faculty of Law to complete unpaid public interest internships in Canada or abroad during the summer following the students' first year of studies. The award will be granted on the basis of the merit of the award proposal and the demonstrated benefits to the student and the agency. The student's academic record and any previous experience working in the public interest sector may also be taken into consideration. Students apply to the Assistant Dean of Administration and Finance of the Faculty of Law in April. Details regarding the application procedures are available at the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Administrative Committee of the Faculty of Law in consultation with Torys.

Global Law Scholarship

Established in November 2010 by the Faculty of Law and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated interest/experience in international or comparative law and/or international study to Queen's Law students who have been selected to attend one of the Global Law Programs at Bader College or who are participating in an international exchange through a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange agreement. Applications for scholarships for students attending Bader College will be due on a date to be announced each autumn. Scholarships for exchange students will be awarded on the basis of the application to study on international exchange.

Admission scholarships are awarded to students who have exhibited exemplary achievements.

All students accepted into the first year of the law program will be considered by the Faculty of Law for these scholarships. Students are not required to submit an application to be considered for these scholarships.

Only selected recipients will be notified.

Alberta Scholar at Queen's Law Scholarship

Established in September 2006 and last revised in October 2018 by alumni and friends from Alberta and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering first year of the J.D. program or a combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law, whose address on admission to Queen's University is from the province of Alberta. The award is renewable for two subsequent years provided a minimum GPA of 3.5 is maintained in a full-time course load. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Law Awards Committee.

Beresford-Knox Scholarship in Law

Established by Jane Knox, Professor, Department of Psychology, and Harvey Beresford, B.A. '64, LL.B. '67, in celebration of their marriage in July 2000. Awarded on the basis of academic merit to a student entering the first year of the Law program with an Honours degree in Psychology.

Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP Entrance Scholarship

Funded by the law firm of Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP, entrance scholarships for law are awarded annually to students of high academic standing for academic excellence shown prior to entry into law school. Financial need is a secondary consideration, taken into account only where academic records are substantially similar.

William M. Bone Scholarship

Established in November 2008 by an anonymous donor in recognition of the dedicated service by William M. Bone, LLB 1974, as President of the Carthy Foundation. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to full-time students entering the first year of the J.D. Program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Dean of Law in consultation with the Chair of the Admissions Committee and the Assistant Dean of Students.

Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP Scholarship

Established in January 2013 and revised in May 2017 by Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student who resides in either the Province of Alberta or Saskatchewan and who is entering first year of a Juris Doctor degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University.

Allan Findlay Memorial Entrance Scholarship

Established by the partners of the late Allan Findlay, Q.C., this scholarship is awarded to a first year law student every three years, on a rotational basis with two other Ontario law schools. Applications will be assessed on the basis of undergraduate academic record and participation in extracurricular affairs, including athletics, debating, student government, drama and the student newspaper.

David Mullan Entrance Scholarship

Established in April 2007 through gifts made to Queen's University, Faculty of Law by alumni and friends in celebration of its 50th anniversary and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students entering the first year of the J.D. program. All students applying for admission to Queen's Faculty of Law J.D. program are automatically considered. No separate application is required. Selection will be made by the Dean of Law in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Students.

Newton Rowell Entrance Scholarships in Law

Established by the Honourable Henry N.R. Jackman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in honour of his grandfather, Newton Wesley Rowell. Three entrance scholarships to be awarded annually to students entering the first year of the Juris Doctor program on the basis of academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, public service. Applications are encouraged from students outside Ontario and from Indigenous students and members of racial minorities.

David and Pearl Tobias Entrance Scholarship

Established by Mr. Norman C. Tobias, a Toronto tax lawyer and associate professor, Faculty of Law, Queen's University, in honour of his parents, David and Pearl Tobias. Awarded to a first year law student each year whose undergraduate record (without taking into account LSAT scores) reflects outstanding achievement in academics, extra-curricular activities, leadership and character, as determined by the Faculty of Law.

At the end of each academic year, faculties review student achievement during that year. Top students are selected to receive one (or more) of the many upper-year scholarships, prizes, and other merit-based awards.

Only those students selected to receive a scholarship or award will be notified.

Aird & Berlis LLP Scholarship

Established in March 2003 and revised in March 2016 by Aird & Berlis LLP. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to full-time students entering second year of the J.D. program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Law students registered in the combined Civil Law-Common Law program are not eligible for this scholarship. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

C. Thomas Asplund Memorial Award in Legal Ethics

Established by colleagues, students and friends in memory of the late C. Thomas Asplund who taught in the Faculty of Law from 1968 to 1990, and awarded annually to a second or third year student for outstanding work in the area of legal ethics.

Baker and MacKenzie Award

The Baker and MacKenzie Award in labour law is presented and funded by the Baker and MacKenzie Foundation. It is awarded annually to a student in second or third year law who submits a course paper in labour law which is judged to be the best paper by a student in that subject area.

Bayne Sellar Ertel Award Award

Established in January 1994 and revised in February 2018 by Bayne Sellar Ertel Carter and awarded to the graduating student in the Faculty of Law who demonstrated academic excellence in criminal law courses. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Bereskin and Parr Prize in Patent Law

Funded by the law firm of Bereskin and Parr, and awarded annually to the student with the highest ranking in Patent Law.

Robert Wallace Best Exchange Award

Established in May 2005 by Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP to honour E. Bruce Leonard, a partner at Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP and Founder of The Insolvency Institute of Canada and The International Insolvency Institute, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to an upper-year student in the Faculty of Law who has demonstrated academic excellence in the subject area of bankruptcy and insolvency.

Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP Prize in Corporation and Taxation

An award is made annually by the law firm of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP to the students exhibiting the highest proficiency in the areas of Business Associations and Taxation.

Dentons Canada LLP Award

The Dentons Canada LLP Award is a gift of that law firm to be awarded annually to a student in second year who submits what is judged to be the best substantial paper during that academic year.

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP Prize in Civil Procedure

Established in April 2012 by the law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, and awarded to students in the J.D. program or combined program in the Faculty of Law on the basis of academic excellence in Civil Procedure. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Law Awards Committee.

Feminist Jurisprudence Award

Established by the family and friends of Sharon Cohen, a graduate of Law '88. Awarded annually for outstanding achievement and participation in feminist jurisprudence.

Alexandra and Mary Fraser Memorial Scholarship

Established by Donald Fraser, LL.B. '62, in memory of his wife, Mary, and his daughter, Alexandra, and awarded on the basis of academic achievement to a student in the Faculty of Law enrolled in the second year of the four-year joint MIR/JD Cooperative Combined Degree Program offered by the School of Industrial Relations and the Faculty of Law at Queen's University. If, in any given year, there is no suitable second-year candidate, the scholarship may be presented to a student in the third or fourth year of the Law component of the Joint MIR/LL.B. Cooperative Degree Program.

Gavel Award

The Gavel Award is given annually by the Queen's Law Students' Society to the third-year student who, on the determination of the student body, has contributed most to student affairs during the three years of law school.

Goodmans LLP Scholarship in Legal Skills

Established in March 2016 and last revised in March 2021 by Goodmans LLP. Awarded to students in the J.D. program or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law on the basis of academic excellence in the Introduction to Legal Skills course. Students in the combined Civil Law-Common Law degree program are not eligible for this award. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP Award

Established in May 1986, and revised in May 2017, by Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP, a Toronto law firm with a deep and abiding loyalty to Queen's University. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in an upper-year course related to business and/or commercial law dealing with restructuring, insolvency, and secured transactions to an upper-year law student in the JD program or a combined JD degree program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Heenan Blaikie LLP Scholarship

Established in January 2012 by the law firm Heenan Blaikie LLP, to foster excellence in legal writing. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to an upper-year JD or combined JD program student registered in an upper-year course in Legal Writing and Written Advocacy.

Insolvency Institute of Canada Scholarship

Established in March 2019 by the Insolvency Institute of Canada and awarded on the basis of academic excellence in bankruptcy, restructuring or insolvency law course(s) to students enrolled in a JD program or combined JD program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Law 1966 Scholarship in Contract Law

Established in September 1996 and revised in September 2016 by the Class of Law 1966 and awarded on the basis of academic excellence in Contract Law to students in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

George Norman Leipnik Award in International Legal Studies

McCarthy Tétrault LLP Scholarship in Legal Ethics

Established in May 2014 by McCarthy Tétrault LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to the top student in each of the two sections of the upper year Legal Ethics and Professionalism course. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law..

McDougall-Watson Memorial Awards

Established in 1990 by Queen's Legal Aid in memory of the contributions made by C. William McDougall (Law '77) and David Watson (Law '87). C. William McDougall was a lawyer with Queen's Legal Aid who died in a car accident shortly after his retirement. David Watson was a caseworker with Queen's Legal Aid who died suddenly in 1989. The awards are presented annually to a deserving student in each caseworker group to recognize excellence in file management, commitment to the objectives of Queen's Legal Aid and sheer hard work. In acknowledging the contributions of C. William McDougall and David Watson, the awards recognize and celebrate the spirit of co-operation which exists between the lawyers and caseworkers in Queen's Legal Aid, a spirit which is fundamental to the work and health of the organization.

Nathens, Siegel LLP Scholarship

Established in September 2017 by Nathens, Siegel LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the Family Law Clinic course to upper year students in the J.D. program or a combined J. D. program in the Faculty of Law.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

P. E. Newbury Prize in Family Law

The estate of Mrs. P.E. Newbury has provided an annual award to a student exhibiting outstanding achievement in Family Law. The award was established by Mrs. P.E. Newbury as a grateful parent, in recognition of the excellence of Queen's University.

Established by Mr. L.H. Tepper Q.C., a Kingston lawyer, in memory of a gold medalist of Dalhousie University Faculty of Law, whose brief career as a member of the Kingston Bar showed great promise. Awarded annually to the student of the first obtaining the highest standing in Criminal Law.

Honourable Mark G. Peacock Scholarship in Constitutional Law 

Established in October 2020 by The Honourable Mark G. Peacock, Law'74, BA (Carleton), LL.M. (L.S.E.), LL.L (Laval) and Ms Dru L. Spencer (B.A., 1981, U.B.C.). Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the first-year course in constitutional law and one or more upper year courses in advanced constitutional law, to students in the J.D. or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law.  Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Queen's Law Students' Society Millennium Award

Established by the Queen's Law Students' Society and awarded annually to the second-year student who, in the determination of the student body, contributed to and participated in the events and activities that defined the second-year class.

Christopher Riggs Administrative Law Scholarship

Established in March 2016 by Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP in memory of founding member Christopher Riggs, Law '67. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in Administrative Law courses to full-time upper year students in the J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. Law students registered in the combined Civil Law-Common Law program are not eligible for this scholarship. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Robinson Ryan Awards

Established in 1975 to honour Professors Stuart Ryan and Lyman Robinson, who contributed greatly to QLSLAS through their time, energy and interest. Awards are made to Caseworkers currently in their final year of law school who, through their continued interest and participation during law school, have most significantly contributed to achievement and development of the goals of the clinic.

Professor H. R. S. Ryan Scholarship

Established by the 1968 graduating class of the Faculty of Law to honour Professor H. R. S. Ryan and revised in January 2017. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to upper year students in the J.D. program or a combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law, for performance in the subject of Evidence. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

David Sabbath Scholarship

Established in 1958 and last revised in May 2014 by the estate of J.L. Sabbath in memory of his son David Sabbath and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student who achieves Dean's Scholar standing at the end of first year of the J.D. program  in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee in the Faculty of Law.

Samworth Advocacy Prize

Established in October 2006 and revised in May 2015 by The Advocates' Society in honour of its 2002-2003 president, Philippa Samworth, B.A. 1974, LL.B. 1977.  Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in a Competitive Moot course and in an Advocacy course to second or third year students in the J.D. program or combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. The Advocates' Society will supplement this prize with free tuition to a basic civil or criminal advocacy skills course offered by The Advocates' Society in various locations around the province, to be taken by the student either during their articling period or in their first year of practice. Taking this course is not a condition of receiving this prize. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Sherrard Kuzz LLP Scholarship in Labour, Employment and Administrative Law 

Established in May 2003 and revised in April 2023 by Sherrard Kuzz LLP. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in at least two, but preferably three, of the following areas of study: labour law, employment law, and administrative law to full-time students entering third year of the J.D. program or a combined J.D. degree program in the Faculty of Law. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

Dan Soberman Awards

Established in 1994 to honour Professor Dan Soberman, the second Dean of Queen's Faculty of Law, who made a successful application to the Law Society of Upper Canada to create Queen's Legal Aid as a volunteer student organization and who has always been a strong supporter of the clinic. Awards are made to Caseworkers currently in their second year of law school who have demonstrated excellent file work and who have generously given their time to assist other Caseworkers.

Spirit Award

The Spirit Award is given annually by the Queen's Law Students' Society to the third year student who, on the determination of the student body, has best and most contributed to the spirit of the law school.

Stringer, Brisbin, Humphrey Prize in Labour Law

Funded by the law firm of Stringer, Brisbin, Humphrey, and awarded annually to the student with the highest standing in Labour Law.

John Deakin Buckley Walton Scholarship in Administrative Law

Established in October 2004 by a bequest from the estate of John Deakin Buckley Walton, Arts 1945, and awarded to the second or third year student in the Faculty of Law, who has the highest standing in Administrative Law.

WeirFoulds LLP Award in Remedies

Established in May 2015 by WeirFoulds LLP and awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the law of Remedies to upper year students in the J.D. program or combined J.D. program in the Faculty of Law. Preference will be given to students in second year.

Wildeboer Dellelce LLP Scholarship in Contract Law 

Established in April 2023 by Wildeboer Dellelce LLP. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence in the first-year course in Contract Law to students enrolled in a J.D. or combined J.D. degree program. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee in the Faculty of Law.

Queen's University students who are participating in a Queen's formal exchange or studying at Bader College will be automatically considered for the following awards. Most of these awards are based on grades.

Robert Wallace Best Exchange Scholarship

Established in October 2010 and revised in January 2016 by Andrew Best, LL.B. 1981, in honour of his father, Robert Wallace Best, B.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) 1950. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence and leadership qualities to exchange students from India or Sri Lanka who have been selected to come to Queen’s Law as part of a formal bilateral exchange. The duration of the exchange will be for a minimum of one term (4 months). Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Law.

The Jeremy & Judith Freedman Award for Studies in Israel

Established in November 2018 by The Jeremy & Judith Freedman Family Foundation. Awarded to students in any year of a JD degree program or combined JD degree program in the Faculty of Law at Queen's University who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange in Israel. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, an expressed interest in exploring Israel and gaining exposure to its people and culture, and a desire to share their experience with their law school colleagues following the completion of their exchange experience. Preference will be given to students who have not yet had the opportunity to visit or study in Israel.  Selection will be made by the Faculty of Law Awards Committee.
