Named Medicine Admission Bursaries

The following bursaries and awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.


The following named Medicine Admission Bursaries have been made possible due to generous donations from specific donors. If a student is selected to receive a Medicine Admission Bursary the name of their bursary may be amended to one of the following awards. Please note that only the name of the award will change after a student has been selected; the value of their Medicine Admission Bursary assistance will not change depending on the name of the award. All students who wish to be considered for Medicine Admission Bursary assistance must submit a Medicine Admission Bursary application.

Dr. George Callahan Award

Established in March 2017 by the George Callahan Foundation and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to undergraduate students entering the first medical year within the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Preference will be given to students with the greatest demonstrated financial need who have not received awards of greater value. Consideration may be given, but is not limited to applicants' membership in a historically disadvantaged group or any other factor relating to educational barriers faced by the applicant or to the ability of the applicant to enrich the diversity of the medical school community and the medical profession. The award is renewable for three subsequent years provided the student remains in good academic standing in a full-time course load and financial need remains evident.

Margaret and David Cook Admission Award

Established in May 2016 by David Cook, MD 1975, MSc 1971, and Margaret Cook and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students entering first year of the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Murray M. and Ruth S. Fraser Medical Student Award

Established in April 2006 by Dr. Murray Fraser, Meds. 1945, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to medical students in the first year program in the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Dr. Richard H. Gray Memorial Award

Established by Shirley and Duncan Gray in memory of their son, Dr. Richard H. Gray, Meds 1981, and awarded on the basis of financial need to undergraduate students in the first medical year within the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences. It is expected that students will use this award to offset educational costs associated with their study of medicine.

Paul and Linda Lucas Bursary in Medicine

Established in January 2013 by Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D) in honour of Mr. Paul Lucas, past Chair of the Board of Rx&D and retired CEO of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students entering the first year of the MD program in the School of Medicine who previously completed the Life Science program in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University.

Meds 1964 Memorial Bursary

Established in July 2011 by the class of Meds 1964 leading up to their 50th reunion in 2014 and in memory of classmates and Dr. R. Bev Lynn, Honorary Class President and former Professor of Surgery at Queen’s. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students in any year of the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences, with preference given to students in first year.

Raleigh Smith Bursary in Medicine

Established by Mr. Raleigh Smith, retired Clerk of the Ontario Ministry of Health. Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student entering the first medical year within the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen's University who is a resident of Ontario. Renewable for the following three years provided satisfactory academic standing is maintained and financial need remains evident.
