Safety at Home

University District Safety Initiative

The University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) was established to reduce the strain put on emergency services during times when large street parties take place, particularly during move-in, orientation week, homecoming weekend, and St. Patrick's Day.

You can find an outline of the Nuisance Party Bylaw, the University District Safety Initiative, Administrative Monetary Penalties, and how to host responsibly here.

You can read more about the City of Kingston UDSI here.

Noise Bylaw

Noise Bylaws are in place to reduce excessive noise in residential areas. Show consideration for others by being mindful of noise levels at all hours. Minimize disruption by:

  • Keeping social gatherings inside
  • Take steps to contain noise.
  • Being aware of shared walls.

Any amplified music or sound causing disturbance, and any persistent noisemaking by a household pet, is prohibited at all times.

Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs)

Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) were implemented in 2020 to more effectively deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are found participating in nuisance behaviour you may receive a penalty notice instead of a Provincial Offences Act ticket. A list of AMPs can be found here.

Tips

Make sure you lock all doors and windows, especially during extended periods of absence (Holiday break, Reading week ect)

Make your home look lived-in, even when you aren't there. Postpone mail subscriptions. Arrange for someone to pick up your mail and shovel your snow. Use timed light switches to create the illusion that someone is inside

Record the serial numbers of all electronics and bikes. The police find lots of stolen items but can't return them to you unless you can prove ownership. Take a picture!

Be a good neighbour. Call the police if you notice a stranger poking around a neighbour's house.

Don't store propane inside and only use BBQs three meters, or more, away from your house.

Invest in an excellent bike lock. Bicycle thieves work quickly. Make your bike the hardest one to steal. No matter where you store your bike, you are encouraged to register your bike with 529 Garage, through the City of Kingston & Kingston Police. The service is free, and only requires an email address.   You can learn more about from the City of Kingston’s website on bicycle locking
