Position:                                  Queen’s Cares Alternative Reading Week Project Leader (10-14 positions)                                                           


Background:

The Student Experience Office (SEO) at Queen’s aims to prepare and support students to achieve not only their personal, social, and academic goals, but also their professional and community aspirations. The SEO supports co-curricular learning and development by offering programs and services to orient students to university life, support their successful transitions into and through university, and encourage their leadership development and community engagement while at university.

Queen’s Cares Reading Week is a four day service-learning initiative that takes place in Kingston over the February Reading Week. Through volunteer opportunities, workshops, presentations, and critical reflection, students explore needs and issues within Kingston while also exploring their own capacity in making real change in their community. Students in the program will work together to complete a project over the course of the week. The program is intended to be more than a volunteer opportunity, and aims to integrate community service with academics, enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Coordinator, Student Development, the Queen’s Cares Alternative Reading Week Facilitator will provide time, leadership, energy, and motivation to the effective implementation of Queen’s Cares Alternative Reading Week. They will be a positive role model and mentor for student participants and remain diligent in the effort to maximize student learning through leading and facilitating project work. As the primary contact between the community engaged learning team and any community groups, the facilitator will strive to ensure harmonious and reciprocal partnerships. They will ensure completion of the project.


Key Duties:

The Queen’s Cares Alternative Reading Week Project Leader will do the following:

Before the Experience

  • Attend all required dates and meet all deadlines
  • Actively participate in promotions efforts including community meeting pushes in residence, tabling, distribution of literature, and social media
  • Connect with the key contact at your organization to discuss your team’s project
  • Regular, professional communication
  • Complete at least one site visit prior to the Experience
  • Test transit routes if applicable
  • Facilitate a team social with your team prior to the Experience

During the Experience

  • Be a leader for your team
  • Work with the key contact at your community partner to make the experience as enjoyable as possible
  • Ensure your team positively represents Queen’s University while on location at your community partner
  • Complete daily reflection logs and send them to SEO staff
  • Support students in completing daily program evaluations

After the Experience

  • Make sure that your team is prepared for the showcase
  • Communicate with your team about how they felt about the experience, what skills they gained, and how they could continue to make an impact in the community
  • Brainstorm future campus-involvement opportunities for your community partner
  • Complete the survey about the experience and encourage your team members and community partner to as well
  • Attend the Queen’s Cares Showcase (March 2018)

Skills Required:

The Queen’s Cares Alternative Reading Week Project Leader must:

  • Be a current Queen’s student
  • Be able to work independently, and as a part of a team
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess excellent organizational skills
  • Be able to exercise good judgment and sound reasoning
  • Demonstrate decision-making and creative problem-solving skills
  • Have good oral and written communication skills
  • Be knowledgeable about the University and support services/resources that are available to students

Eligibility

The Queen's Cares Project Leader must:

  • Be a registered Queen’s student
  • Remain in good academic standing for the duration of the position term 
  • Submit a satisfactory Canadian Police Information Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Check within 2 weeks of beginning the position term.  They will be responsible to maintain a clean CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Check for the duration of their role.

Term of Position:                   November 20, 2017 –March 11, 2018

  • Facilitator Training: November 20 to January 26, 8hrs (times TBD)
  • Program Orientation: January 27 and February 10, 1-4pm
  • Service Learning: February 20-23, 7am-10pm daily
  • Showcase: March 2, 1-4pm

Some non-traditional hours of work (e.g. evenings and weekends) will be required.


Remuneration:                       $200 honorarium
