Since 1970, our rigorous and well-focused two-year Master of Planning (M.PL.) program allows our students to develop the knowledge and skills they require to become leaders in the planning field and to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving urban environment.



Welcome to the School of Urban and Regional Planning Website

The School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) at Queen's University has been in existence since 1970. It offers a Master of Urban and Regional Planning (M.PL.) degree. This is a professional education program, which also has a significant research component. Its graduates go into careers in city and metropolitan planning, and in policy and program development. It is recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. The two-year multidisciplinary program has two options: 12 courses plus a thesis, and 14 courses plus a report.

The School has the following defining characteristics.

  1. An abiding commitment to social equity, economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, and ethical responsibility;
  2. An emphasis on both analytical skills and normative perspectives;
  3. An emphasis on both fundamental research and problem exploration and resolution, with extensive use of workshops, case studies, simulations, practicums and field work.
  4. A balanced mix of required and electives courses.
  5. Three areas of concentration.
  6. A supervised summer internship program.
