The Writing Centre's program of workshops, credit courses, and one-on-one writing consultations is designed to support students at Queen's in thinking and writing effectively in all disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Appointments to discuss your work with professional staff are available, free of charge, throughout the day and most evenings. Peer tutor appointments are also available some evenings (see below).

You may also use one appointment to work on an application or resume.

To book a one-on-one appointment for up to 50 minutes with a writing consultant, call 613-533-6315 or drop by the Writing Centre office in the Learning Commons, Stauffer Library, ground floor.

Front Desk Hours: Monday -Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

PEER WRITING CONSULTATIONS are available throughout the term. Our trained Peer Writing Assistants offer on-on-one sessions for students taking first and second year courses. Sessions run in the evening, Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Appointments are 25 minutes in length.

To ensure an appointment space for yourself, sign up on the sheets on the white board outside our office. Sheets for the following week are posted every Friday morning. You can also just drop in, but it's a good idea to book, as spots fill up.

Peer writing assistants do not proofread. Instead, they discuss proofreading and editing techniques and skills for you to apply to your work.

Our English as a Second Language program provides writing support to students whose first language is not English, offering a variety of resources including workshops, ESL handouts, books, and help in preparing for English proficiency tests, particularly for engineering students.

ESL students are welcome to make appointments with any writing tutors. Students with particular concerns about their writing in English can arrange a consultation with the Writing Centre's ESL program coordinator, Donna Katinas.

Please note: the Writing Centre is not a proofreading service.

PREPARING FOR AN APPOINTMENT

PLAN AHEAD: Appointments become scarce at periods when many essays are due, so make an appointment early in the process, ideally for several days to a week before your paper's deadline.

COME WITH QUESTIONS: Note on your paper anywhere you are unsure of the writing or have a question, whether about thesis statements, grammar issues or structure. With your questions worked out ahead of time, you will be able to use your appointment time most effectively.

BRING: Besides the draft of your paper, bring your instructor's assignment sheet, any book you are responding to, outside resources, grading rubrics, notes, etc.
If you are still trying to decide what to write on or how to focus your ideas, bring notes on the options you're considering. Use the session as a sounding board to focus or choose what direction to take next.
