The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop writing skills required by non-profit and governmental organizations and to increase their understanding of the role of civic responsibility. Through processes of critical reflection and feedback from peers, students will become more informed and focused writers.

In the fall term, students carry out a writing project for a local community group. Classroom discussions and workshops will support this work by focusing on the various writing skills required by these organizations. In addition, by maintaining a journal throughout the term, students will learn to effectively reflect upon their experience with their writing project and community group.

In the winter term, students present their experience and evaluation of their writing project to the class. Relevant research, writing, and editing skills will be developed. Classroom discussion will deal with issues regarding literacy and global concerns.

Writing 175, Writing 195, or permission of the instructor

Stewart, Kay, Marian Allen, and Shelley Galliah, Forms of Writing, 5th edition ( Toronto: Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2009).
Additional readings will be placed on Reserve at Stauffer library or are available on-line.


Requirements and Assessment:
Fall Term:
Journal Entries 1 and 2: 10%(5% each)
Grammar Test: 10%

Winter Term:
Research Essay: 15%
Journal Entries 3 and 4: 10% (5% each)
Community Service Writing Project: 25%
Oral Presentation (Service Learning Experience): 15%
Critical Response: 5%
Course Participation: 10%

Late Penalty
Late assignments will only be accepted without penalty in the case of medical or family emergency, with documentation. Otherwise, late assignments will be assessed at 2% per day. Late papers will not be accepted beyond two weeks.
