OUR ONE-ON-ONE WRITING CONSULTATIONS ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE USED FOR REWRITING OR PROOFREADING YOUR PAPER

  • Although our staff will point out examples of grammatical or stylistic weakness, they concentrate on general principles of writing, leaving it up to you to apply them. The responsibility for making any changes to your work rests with you.

  • Sessions will not be conducted on laptops, as these tend to become proofreading exercises. Please bring a hard copy.

  • We cannot be very helpful if you visit us the day your assignment is due. Leave enough time to revise your work after your appointment, usually several days or even a week.

  • Students are entitled to eight sessions at the Writing Centre per school year. Appeals for additional sessions must be addressed to the manager.

  • Students are limited to one appointment per day.

  • In the Spring and Summer terms, students are limited to one appointment per week and six in total. Appeals for additional sessions must be addressed to the Spring/Summer Program Coordinator.

  • Any student seeking help with an application and/or resume is entitled to one session only for this purpose.

  • Take-home examinations cannot be the subject of any appointment.

AN APPOINTMENT MADE SHOULD BE AN APPOINTMENT KEPT

  • If you need to cancel your appointment, be sure to call 24 hours in advance. Failure to give sufficient notice or to appear for a scheduled appointment will result in a $25 charge added to your Queen's account.

  • Any student who arrives more than 15 minutes late may forfeit that appointment.

  • Any student who fails to either attend or cancel an appointment may not be entitled to further services of the Writing Centre. "No-shows" will be counted toward a student's allotted eight sessions.

  • Appeals due to extenuating circumstances should be directed to the manager.

WE ADHERE TO A STRICT POLICY OF NON-INTERFERENCE IN REGARD TO STUDENT-INSTRUCTOR RELATIONS

  • Writing Centre staff do not appraise comments and/or the grade on a marked paper, nor do they advocate on behalf of students.

  • Writing Centre staff cannot fulfill the duties of a teaching assistant. Questions about course content should be directed to your instructor or TA.

  • Although members of our staff teach or act as TAs or markers for various Queen's courses, appointments may not be used for students to meet with their instructor or TA.

Any student with a particular concern or complaint should make an appointment to speak with the manager, Susan Korba, at 613-533-6000, ext. 77630, korbas@queensu.ca.
