First-Generation Student Admission Pathway

What does First-Generation Mean?

A first-generation student is a student who is within the first-generation of their family to pursue post-secondary education.

A student could be eligible for this pathway if:

  • Their parents did not pursue a post-secondary education
  • They have a sibling that has attended a post-secondary institution but neither of their parents have pursued a post-secondary education.

Focus of the First-Generation Admission Pathway:

General Application Support: The first-generation Recruitment Representative is available to support you from the moment you consider applying to the summer before you start your first year.

Introductions to the

  • Student Experience Office:  Make the most of your university experience through Q Success which includes events throughout the year and 1-on-1 mentoring.
  • Student Academic Success Services: Develop skills to succeed academically, including time management, note-taking, and study skills.
  • Student Awards Office: Learn about information regarding government student assistance to Queen's scholarships, bursaries, work programs and more!

Education & Career Planning: When is the right time to start planning for post-secondary? You can start to plan your pathway as early as grade 7! Make sure you are choosing the courses that will help you to achieve your goal!

Financial Assistance: OSAP, bursaries and more!

Parental Assurance: Pursuing post-secondary education is a big decision! We can help your trusted adults and parents to understand the opportunity and investment you are making in your future!

What do I need in order to apply to Queen’s University through this pathway?

In order to be eligible for this pathway, you must attend one of our listed community organizations. At the start of the academic year a Queen's representative will visit each organization and note down the names of interested students, so be sure to attend and inform your coordinator of your interest!

How long do I have to be involved with a community organization in order to apply through this admission pathway?

If you are in your final year of high school and you are interested in applying to this pathway, you can still join a community organization near you. Not sure which one to join? Send us an email at 1gen@queensu.ca and we will help you find one.

What if I am a first-generation student but do not attend a community organization?

Send us an email at 1gen@queensu.ca and perhaps we can find one that is close to you!

What if I am a first-generation student but attend a community organization that is not listed?

Send us an email at 1gen@queensu.ca with your name and that of your community organization. Maybe we can add it to our list!
