Our Path Forward

June 25 marks my fourth complete month at the Office of Advancement. This has been a time to get to know Queen’s and my new colleagues as well as a time to make some plans for the year ahead. I thought I’d share a few of those plans with you today.

First of all, the communications, marketing, events, and donor relations team (we’re trying to think of a new name short enough to fit on a business card  – any thoughts?) is taking a hard look at everything we do, from the way we plan events to the posts we put on Twitter to the way we thank our donors as we build an integrated communications plan for Advancement. Our goal is to understand what we do well and what we need to do better. We want to adopt the best ways to measure our success and we want to understand our alumni and donors better so that we can build programs to help us engage with them more effectively. Above all, we want to discover the best methods to demonstrate the many ways the people at Queen’s and our many alumni are reshaping the world.

We hope to finish this plan by the fall so stay tuned for updates as we move it along.

Internal communications is another priority for our team. Over the next few months we will work hard to improve the way we share information with each other so that you are among the first to know what is going on in the Office of Advancement and beyond. This newsletter is a start.

To do a good job, you need good tools. That’s why we are working closely with ITM to find suitable replacements for our ageing email and events registration systems. This is a significant project that requires thoughtful oversight. To that end, I have asked Julia Bryan to be Special Projects Manager for the next year to see this through. Julia will work collaboratively with ITM and across the university to make sure this project is a success (more on this project elsewhere in this newsletter). We are also hiring a Digital Designer for a 12-month term.

There are a number of other things we have on the go, including the JDUC Revitalization and Promise campaigns. We are also in the early stages of updating our visual standards. I’ll have more to say about these things in future newsletters. 

I am looking forward to working closely with all of you in the coming months and I invite you to connect with me at any time with your thoughts about how we can do our job better.


New Fund Minimums

Over the past year, Advancement has initiated a review of the formal minimums for faculty funds, both endowed and expendable. We have discussed various factors such as philanthropic goals, administrative costs, volume of funds, impact of smaller endowments and the associated difficulty of spending, and the donor experience. We have also reviewed endowment minimums at comparable peer institutions while conducting an extensive analysis of Queen's faculty funds to inform our decision making.

After consultation with Queen's Finance, deans, department heads, faculty business officers, Advancement faculty fundraisers and others, we are pleased to share the new funding requirements for the establishment of faculty-based trusts and endowments, effective June 1:

1. $50,000 minimum to create a new endowed faculty fund that would generate approximately $2,000 per annum, based on the long-term payout rate of 4.0%.

2. $10,000 minimum to create a new expendable faculty fund or trust.

It is important to note that there will still be options for donors who want to make gifts less than the new minimums. Contributions may be directed to an existing endowment or expendable faculty fund with similar fund restrictions, or funds could be directed to dean's/department head's discretionary funds, for instance. 

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the consultative process. Please note, there are no changes to the funding requirements for student awards.

Last Chance: National Philanthropy Day Ideas

National Philanthropy Day (Nov. 15) celebrates the outstanding commitment from supporters of non-profit organizations in our communities. Advancement is looking for creative ways for Queen’s to demonstrate its gratitude for the people and organizations who contribute so much to the university. Please submit your ideas by June 25 to Scott Anderson, scott.anderson@queensu.ca
