Bader International Study Centre 25th Anniversary Celebrations

Join us at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) to celebrate 25 years of teaching and learning at Herstmonceux Castle this Canada Day weekend, June 29-30, 2019. 

On Saturday, BISC alumni, students, family, and friends are invited to reminisce with a guided tour of the Castle and Bader Hall, hear from BISC professors, enjoy "Queen's Tea" in the Elizabethan Gardens, explore the Observatory Science Centre, join children's activities and games, socialize with classmates at The Headless Drummer, enjoy a hot buffet dinner, live music, and much more.

On Sunday, Queen's and BISC alumni, students, family, friends, and the local community are invited to attend a Canada Day celebration at the Castle.

Weekend Activities

 

 Saturday, June 29

 

The Observatory Science Centre   

Open 11 am–6 pm 

Spectacular hands-on science and discovery among the domes and telescopes of a world famous astronomical observatory. Explore Discovery Park, a 'Science Playground' of large-scale interactive exhibits and Water Play. All children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Guests must show their tricolour bracelet at the door for free admission.

Herstmonceux Castle Tours  

Noon–12:20 pm 

Courtyard (Information and Merchandise Booth)

Reminisce with classmates and friends as you take a guided tour of the Bader International Study Centre. Tour includes the Dining Hall, Ballroom, Conference Room, Elizabethan Room, Dacre Room, Seminar 1, Library, and Courtyard.

Queen’s Tea  

1:30–3 pm

Elizabethan Gardens 

Enjoy sandwiches, scones, dessert, a glass of Pimm’s or Elderflower fizz, and tea and coffee.

Opening Remarks and Keynote Speaker   

2–3:15 pm

Celebrate 25 years of teaching and learning at the Castle with opening remarks from Daniel R. Woolf, Artsci’80, Queen’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, and Hugh Horton, Vice-Provost and Executive Director, Bader International Study Centre. 

Join NASA astronaut and former International Space Station (ISS) Commander Drew Feustel, PhD'95, DSc'16, as he shares insights from his career as a NASA astronaut and his recent six-month mission onboard the International Space Station.

Be part of a special plaque unveiling with Queen’s Chancellor Jim Leech and Hugh Horton, dedicated to Alfred Bader, BSc’45, BA’46, MSc’47, LLD’86, and Isabel Bader, LLD’07, for their dedication and generosity to the Bader International Study Center. 

Mini Lecture #2: Commitment in Education

Join Dr. Barbara Holler as she gives a critical reflection on the subject of commitment in the context of higher education.

The BISC Science and Innovation Labs Building Opening and Tours  

4:15–4:45 pm

The BISC Science and Innovation Labs 

Join the Lord Lieutenant for the official unveiling of the BISC’s new Teaching Lab. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the space.

Headless Drummer  

5–11:30 pm

Bader Hall Tours

Take a walk down memory lane with a guided tour of Bader Hall. 

Hot Buffet Dinner and Live Music

10 am–5 pm

Celebrate Canada Day Herstmonceux Castle style! Come out to see falconry, medieval knights, a stilt walker, and participate in face painting, archery, self-guided garden tours, and more.

NASA Astronaut Meet and Greet

Elizabethan Gardens 

Last chance to meet Drew Feustel, PhD'95, DSc'16, and Indira Feustel and take a picture with a NASA astronaut (and dual Canadian-US citizen!)

Pick-Up Street Hockey  

2–3 pm

Parade Square

Grab a hockey stick (provided) and have fun in a good-old-fashioned Canadian hockey game.

Symphonova  

3–4 pm 

Ballroom

Experience an orchestral performance unlike any other. Led by Shelley Katz, BISC Musician in Residence and internationally acclaimed conductor, inventor, and pianist, the Symphonova uses digital technology to enable just twelve solo musicians to create the richness and power of a full symphonic experience.
