Honorary Degree Recipients

Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, and his wife, Rosalynn Carter received honorary degrees at fall 2012 convocation.

The Carters are the co-founders of The Carter Center, a not-for-profit, non-government organization dedicated to championing human rights and alleviating human suffering. The organization has led the fight against Guinea worm disease, reducing the number of cases worldwide from 3.5 million in 1986 to 521 as of October 2012. They have won countless international awards and commendations including, for President Carter, the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002.

Addressing the graduating class at the November 21 convocation, the Carters spoke about the great potential each student’s life holds, with Mrs. Carter noting, "You are at an important juncture in your life, with a chance to do things you may never be able to do again. I hope you will take advantage of this period. Take this time to do something for someone else."
