Global & Population Health

GLPH 271/3.0

In this course, emphasis will be placed on population health, instead of the health of individuals. Population and global health prioritize partnerships and resource sharing, instead of unilateral relationships, and focuses on advocacy.

NOTE: A maximum of 6.0 units from courses offered by other Faculties and Schools may be counted towards the Program and/or Plan requirements of any degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science


Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Recognize health as a human right in order to identify opportunities to demonstrate social responsibility and service.
  2. Integrate social and physical determinants of health to assess the unique needs of special populations.
  3. Draw on examples of successful interventions and best practices to assess the community’s access to resources and design a well-informed health advocacy plan.
  4. Identify and engage the appropriate stakeholders to develop consensus on the rationale and execution of a health advocacy plan.


This course is a critical examination of the foundation of global health, including (1) Underpinning concepts and principles; (2) Global health burden and measurement methods; (3) Global health development actors; (4) Global health research; (5) Global health interventions. Students will learn how health has been defined and measured worldwide, how this has impacted health development activities, and how these ramify throughout broad development initiatives and discourses. Case studies will highlight global health and development activities related to Indigenous peoples; agriculture and food security; health impact assessment of natural resource development; etc.

Final Examination

Students must write their exam on the day and time scheduled by the University. The start time may vary slightly depending on the off-campus exam centre. Do not schedule vacations, appointments, etc., during the exam period.

SOLUS is Queen’s Student On-Line University System. You’ll have access to a SOLUS account once you become a Queen’s student. You’ll use SOLUS to register for courses, add and drop courses, update your contact information, view financial and academic information, and pay your tuition.

About OnQ

onQ is Queen's online learning platform. You'll log into onQ to access your course. All materials related to your course—notes, readings, videos, recordings, discussion forums, assignments, quizzes, groupwork, tutorials, and help—will be on the onQ site.

About Credit Units

Queen’s courses are weighted in credit units. A typical one-term course is worth 3.0 units, and a typical two-term course is worth 6.0 units. You combine these units to create your degree. A general (three-year) BA or BSc requires a total of 90 credit units.

Computer Requirements

To take an online course, you’ll need a high speed internet connection as well as a microphone and speakers to be able to watch videos, hear sounds, and participate in interactive online activities. A webcam is recommended but not necessary.

  • Laptop or Desktop computer purchased within the last 5 years. (mobile devices are not supported)
  • Windows Vista SP2/Mac OSX 10.9 or higher
  • Up to date versions of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. Please note that Google Chrome is not recommended for use in our courses.
  • Most recent version of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash
