Charan's current research examines the persistence of control regimes, focusing on Sri Lanka. He has published and co-authored book chapters on regional order in South and Southeast Asia and the “development through peace” paradigm in Sri Lanka, while co-authoring (with Ambika Satkunanathan) “Mistaking Politics for Governance: The Politics of Interim Arrangements in Sri Lanka 2002-2005 (International Centre for Ethnic Studies, 2009). At Bader College, he is also an academic advisor and faculty liaison for career ready skills and the Bader Skills Award.

Prior to arriving at Bader College in the summer of 2018, Charan taught a number of undergraduate courses in the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University, predominately on the Politics of Ethnicity and Nationalism, and on Regional International Organization. Before arriving at Queen’s, he was a Program Manager and Researcher at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, a research institute on cultural pluralism and tolerance in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Here, he carried out research work on state reform and on interim arrangements in peace negotiations while formulating and coordinating the research program on State, Politics and Power.

Charan is happy to supervise POLS 594 summer research projects on any of the above research interests as well as on international security; critical IPE and IR theory; security communities; global health security and pandemic preparedness; Brexit and British national identity; post-colonialism and Empire; immigration and multiculturalism; and the politics of representation.
