Teaching & Experiential Learning

The city film, common throughout world cinema, tackles such issues as alienation; disenfranchisement and personal crises. In this course, students will visit a European capital, and explore the city first hand, and then examine how that city is translated into the filmic text. The beauty of studying a course like this at the Castle is that students, working in collaboration with each other and with the instructor, can craft their own research project in a way that’s germane to their experience of the city / their research work. We also have ample opportunity to visit London and Paris, to study the cities that we see in the films.

Research

My own area of research specialization is Asian Cinema, with specific focus on the cinemas of Taiwan and Japan. I also sit on the editorial board for two academic journals; the IAFOR journal of Asian Studies and the Intellect journal Asian Cinema, for which I am the book reviews editor. I also have published several articles on Asian cinema, and have presented academic papers at conferences in Macau, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada and the UK.
