Put some accuracy into the French that you already know, with practice in reading, writing, listening and grammar, but have fun doing it! Learn about French food and customs, the lyrics to songs and take part in rôle plays.

This course will focus on culture, contemporary events and items in the news, as well as introduce students to what is often their first experience of French literature.
Course Information:
Practice in reading, writing, grammar review, and literary analysis. For students wishing to complete a major, medial, or minor Plan in French. This course provides intensive instruction and practice in all the skills of language acquisition (speaking, reading, writing, understanding). It will consist of a weekly grammar lesson, providing instruction and active participation in acquiring the fundamentals of French grammar, with accompanying exercises. Students will also have the opportunity to read and discuss a short novel and a short play written in French and to take part in debates, presentations and discussions in French. There will be a weekly small group session to allow for intense practice in speaking, exchanging views and developing fluent oral efficiency in the language.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, successful learners will:
- develop their fluency in French to a more advanced level.
- improve their accent by weekly discussions around a given topic, reciting poems, staging a play and playing roles of ordinary French speakers.
- refine their writing skills and grammatical accuracy by writing short grammatical compositions every other week, and an essay for the end of the term.
- extend their vocabulary by engaging creatively with authentic French multimedia (songs, films, plays etc).
- become aware of cultural differences and thus develop their critical thinking regarding various aspects of the francophone world by engaging with texts and audio documents from West Africa, Canada, France and the Pacific.
Experiential and Active Learning Opportunities:
Examples of previous EAL opportunities for this course include visits to contemporary exhibitions in London, such as the portraits of Cézanne and Gauguin, as well as the Institut Français de Londres and a trip to London Coliseum to watch a performance in French of Notre-Dame de Paris.
Prerequisites and Exclusions:
Prerequisite None. Exclusion A maximum of 6.0 units from FREN100; FREN101; FREN102; FREN110; FREN150. Equivalency FREN100.
