Senior Lecturer in Art History / Head of Teaching and Learning
I am the Head of Teaching and Learning and Senior Lecturer in Art History, cross appointed as Adjunct in the Department of Art History and Conservation in main campus. As a lecturer, I am passionate about training the next generation of art historians, curators, and conservators by implementing opportunities for active and experiential learning in the Art History curriculum.
Dr Simon Coppard
Biology
I am a multidisciplinary evolutionary biologist and I use morphology, ecology, molecular biology and paleontology to answer questions on how species have diverged and interact with their environments. I was previously a senior research fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama and have conducted fieldwork and taught at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. More recently I taught at Hamilton College in upstate New York.
Dr Anna Taylor
Psychology / Director of Academic Affairs
I teach first and upper year psychology courses at the Castle. I like teaching at the Castle because the small class sizes and out-of-classroom experiences enable me to get to know students beyond their academic presence in the classroom. Students frequently stay in touch after they leave the Castle and knowing that I have contributed to the skills that ensure their ongoing success is incredibly rewarding.
Dr Robert Hyland
Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies / Head of Global Engagement
I’m a film researcher, who specializes in the cinemas of Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.
At the Castle, I teach introduction to film studies, and an upper year course on Cinema and the City, which is an opportunity to see how a complex structure like a city, is fragmented and recombined to express the filmmakers’ understanding of modernity and progress.
Dr Peter Lowe
English Literature
I teach classes in English Literature, and am interested in what novels, plays, and poems can tell us about the world of the past and about our own time. I love reading, and I love talking with other people about the things that we have read, sharing opinions, and looking closely at a writer’s style and ideas.
Beth Richan
Health Studies & Health Sciences
I teach courses in Health Studies and Health Sciences and am passionate about supporting students to develop their academic skills and personal growth. Problem-and-active based learning anchor my courses to consolidate concepts and learning outcomes.
In addition to teaching undergraduate, graduate and distance learning courses, I have held a variety of senior positions in international development programs that focus on people with disabilities within the health, education and employment sectors primarily in South East Asia and the Balkans.
Dr Diana Gilchrist
Music / Principal Lecturer for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
I'm a singer and I love to bring my professional experience from around the world into the classroom where I teach MUTH 111 and MUTH 232. Classical music is often considered inaccessible and elitist. But I enjoy engaging students in exploring ‘great works’ in ways that allow us to challenge some of the myths and orthodoxies that can surround them.
Dr Lucas Villegas-Aristizabal
History
I achieved my BA (Hons) in History at Richmond the American International University in London, and both my MA and PhD in Medieval History at the University of Nottingham. My doctoral thesis focused on the participation of the Norman and Anglo-Norman nobility in the Iberian wars of reconquest due to the changing theological arguments for crusading.
As a Medieval Historian, it is a pleasure to teach at the picturesque Herstmonceux Castle. Its small class sizes make Bader College the perfect environment to interact closely with students and allow them to focus on their main areas of interest through their written and oral work.

I am a critical musicologist and educator. Social History of Popular Music is a great way to understand how and why certain styles and genres of music evolved over the last two centuries, and the impact the music has had in culture and society.

Dr Kalliopi Kyriakopoulou
Politics
I have studied Classics and Philosophy and I hold a PhD in Politics and Government. I teach European Politics and Integration at Bader College and I enjoy synthesizing my politics and philosophy backgrounds in my effort to make sense of what is happening on the European and global level.
I also hold a position of Visiting Professor at the Law Department of the Catholic University in Lille, France, where I teach Geopolitics and Comparative Politics to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Sandra Araya Rojas
Spanish
I am an Accredited Examiner for the DELE Examinations and have taught Spanish and Latin American Culture at Higher Education level since 2010 within undergraduate programmes in Hispanic Studies, Training Programmes and University Language Centres. Over my career, I have taught and coordinated courses in Oral Spanish, Grammar, Communication and Discourse Analysis, as well as making contribution to curriculum development and design teaching materials.
As a Spanish Tutor at Bader College, I love exploring the connections of the Global North and the Global South and making my classes function as an education meeting point. I am passionate about Español!
Honey Salvadori
Journalism
I teach the multimedia journalism course at Bader College and I am also a practising photojournalist. The past decade has seen radical changes in the profession of journalism, digital technology and the internet have created an information culture that requires new skills and also offers a new international audience.
Dr Claire Kennan
History & Research
I am a Medieval Historian specialising in the history of Britain between 1300 and 1500, with a particular focus on the social and cultural impact of the Black Death, the pre-Reformation parish, popular piety and medieval guilds.
I have taught Medieval History at King’s College London and Royal Holloway, University of London. In 2019 I was one of the AHRC’s Creative Economy Engagement Fellows at The National Archives (London) and between 2017 and 2020 I was the Medieval Specialist on the £1 million National Lottery Heritage funded Citizens Project.
'I am currently the Research Coordinator and a Senior Lecturer in History at Bader College and a Collaborator on the SSHRC-funded Environments of Change Project. I regularly appear in the UK media having recently worked with the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, BBC Radio 4 and History Hit. As a medievalist I love being able to teach students in a 15th century castle and engage the wider public with the castle’s history and heritage.
Dr Ezra Cohen
Philosophy
I’m a philosopher specialising in meta-ethics, moral psychology, and the philosophy of action with additional interests in the history of philosophy (especially ancient and early modern philosophy) metaphysics and philosophy of language. I previously taught at the University of Sussex, where I also completed my doctoral work, and was a Research Associate at the Guerrand Hermes Foundation for Peace.
At the Castle, I teach PHIL 259 Critical Thinking, PHIL 151 Great Works of Philosophy, and INTS 306 Culture, Identity and Self.
Charan Rainford
Politics
My name is Charan Rainford and I enjoy introducing students to the dynamic and contested nature of politics.
Charan Rainford is Lecturer in Political Studies at Bader College. His research interests revolve around majority-minority relations in divided settings and the successful management of such diversity, ethnic conflict and nationalism, and the study of non-traditional security and regional security cooperation.

Development Studies
I’m an environmental social scientist and teacher with interests in human geography, critical development studies, and political ecology.
I joined Bader College as Lecturer in Global Development and Culture in August 2022, having previously held the position of Teaching Fellow in Geography and International Development at the University of East Anglia.
Dr Mo Jia
Economics
I teach first year economics at Bader College, Queen’s University, in the Castle. I am familiar with both microeconomics and macroeconomics, and have a background in finance, banking and economic policy.
I love getting to know the students and engage with them to help develop their economic thinking, especially how to apply what they learn in the classroom to analyse real-world problems.
Sam Belbin
Health Sciences
I teach multiple courses within the health department where I encourage active discussions that have students questioning their privileges and biases.
I worked as an Intensive Care Unit nurse in multiple locations across Canada throughout the pandemic, allowing me to bring bedside experience into my lectures. Additionally, I have a B.A. in Economics from Queen’s University and a M.Sc. in Health Policy, Planning, and Finance from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr Johnson Odukoya
Chemistry
I am a chemist with a wealth of teaching, research, and supervision experience in a university setting. I had my academic qualifications from The Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria (first and second degrees), and Cranfield University, United Kingdom (PhD). My postdoctoral research fellowship was at University of Johannesburg, South Africa.
At Bader College, I am the Lecturer in Chemical Sciences, and I teach General Chemistry (CHEM 112). The course is designed to provide first-year undergraduate students with the basic knowledge of chemical concepts and their applications. I give all necessary support to aid the understanding of the course and to achieve high students’ success rate.
Dr Matt Haynes
Mathematics & Physics
I am an industrial mathematician. My research focuses on applying advanced mathematical techniques (e.g., asymptotic analysis, calculus of variations and functional analysis of higher-order functionals) to industrial problems.
This knowledge of working with industry feeds into my teaching ethos. From this, I challenge students with meaningful, real-world problems that are both interesting for their real-world applications and the underlying mathematical constructs.
Dr Isabelle Brent
Psychology & Intercultural Relations
Isabelle is the Head of Student Success and Development at Bader College and teaches courses in psychology and intercultural relations. She has a degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge, and an MSc and DPhil from the University of Oxford. Isabelle's doctoral research focused on representations of childhood and its relationship to independent learning.
Before moving to the US, Isabelle worked for the Sutton Trust – a charity that provides educational opportunities for young people from non-privileged backgrounds. This experience gave Isabelle a commitment to widening access to higher education and an interest in developing engaging teaching materials.
Isabelle has also worked in the field of experiential learning and as an educational consultant in the UK and US on projects including developing higher education teaching resources, study support and digital learning.
