Job Overview

The Bader International Study Centre (BISC), the UK-based campus of Queen’s University (Canada), is seeking a Student Life Coordinator for a 10-month term commencing 15 August 2018 until 03 July 2019.  The Student Life Coordinator (SLC) is a key part of the professional service offered by Student Services. The SLCs play a major role in defining student life at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) and is an essential part of the student experience.

Job Description

The role of SLC is a challenging position. SLCs live in the student residence take responsibility for dealing with a wide variety of issues including offering advice and support to students, assisting in the disciplinary process and facilitating intentional living and learning experiences that enhance student growth and well-being, promote intellectual development, and guide their development as individuals and community members. Student Services also deliver a significant amount of social and educational programming on campus that reinforces the university’s academic mission and contributes to the student’s overall learning experience.  As an SLC you will be expected to be pro-active, to take personal responsibility and to work as a part of team in which effective communication and reliability is key. In addition to regular programming duties as an SLC you will take on one specific portfolio. Each portfolio will be responsible for mentoring and leading a small group of students.

The nature of the work requires SLCs to work a shift pattern as determined by the Assistant Student Services Manager and the needs of the students. Duties will vary somewhat, but you must expect to be ‘on call’ for a week at a time. As an SLC you will be part of a relatively small team, the majority of whom live in the residence building. You will be the first point of contact for the students and you will be called upon to exercise common sense and sound judgement, sometimes in crisis situations.

Person specification

We are looking for self-reliant individuals who can take the initiative and work in a fast-paced and demanding environment. The ideal candidate will have experience of living and working in a university residence setting.

Applicants are expected to be educated to degree standard or equivalent and have suitable experience delivering programming in a university environment. Experience in, or familiarity with, the Canadian post-secondary sector would be an asset. Must be eligible to work in the UK (see application package for more details). Please note applicants will be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Record check from their country of origin and/or an enhanced UK Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
