The Bader International Study Centre is an exciting place to begin your university-level science studies. Our small class sizes mean that you will interact closely with your professors in both the classroom and lab settings. Under their guidance, you will have the opportunity to engage deeply with the course material. This style of learning is sure to give you an in-depth knowledge that will set you apart from your peers as you enter second year and beyond.
Laboratories and Experiential Learning Opportunities
- Perform hands-on experiments under the guidance of our experienced faculty. Lab sessions will be delivered in small groups on the Herstmonceux Estate and during off-site field studies.
- Use the 500-acre Castle Estate as a living laboratory, collecting samples and performing experiments on the rich variety of ecosystems and landforms that are present on the estate. From the Castle moat, to the dense woodland, to the expansive fields, you will engage with your surroundings in ways that would not be possible on a traditional university campus.
- Access state-of-the-art labs off-site for Biology, Chemistry and Physics lab sessions, and use self-directed and inquiry-based learning methods to explore course concepts.
- Take advantage of a blended learning approach: traditional classroom teaching is integrated with online teaching methods to help you sustain a high level of engagement with your learning.
A place to gain new skills
As well as knowledge of scientific functions in your chosen field, by the end of your first year you will have:
- Laboratory skills, and be proficient in the use of technical equipment and scientific instruments.
- Hands-on experience studying science in the field.
- Knowledge of quality control and safety regulations.
- Experience designing experimental studies.
- Problem-solving skills for both quantitative and qualitative problems.
- Opportunities to present literature and research findings in posters, seminars, and at a research conference hosted in conjunction with the University of Sussex.
- Ability to observe and make measurements.
- Experience of writing, reviewing, and summarizing reports and scientific documents.
- Experience of analyzing and evaluating information, including statistical analysis of scientific data.
- An understanding of the role of science in global affairs.
