Library Service

Library

While studying at the BISC, you will find the Library to be a significant source of information and support for many of your learning needs. The Library is housed in two rooms central to the teaching spaces within the Castle. Its intimate size allows you to benefit from all of the services one would expect of a university library, including access to individualized support and attention when you need it, without feeling overwhelmed or uncertain where to begin.

When you use the BISC Library you will have access to:

All of your required reading

In our print collection you will find all of your required reading, and much additional reading that you will be encouraged to engage with during your courses. The majority of these items are available to borrow from the Library so you can take them with you to study wherever it suits you. You will also find books and films that will fill any leisure hours you have – our collection is not all about studying.

To discover what we have in our collection visit our Library catalogue.

The Library’s lending service is available 24/7 through ‘BASIL’, the self-issue service, which will enable you to borrow books and other items whenever it suits you.

Online resources provided by Queen's University Library

You also have access to an extensive range of information online, the complete text of books and journal articles, through Summon, QUL’s online search engine. You can browse Summon without a username and password, but when you wish to download the whole text, you will need your Queen’s Net ID, which will be given to you when you register.

Individualized support in the use of information both in print and online

The Library team will help you make the most of the print and online resources. A member of the team is available from 9.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Thursday and 10.00am to 5.00pm on a Friday. Additionally you can use the Librarian’s office hours to gain more detailed individualised support whenever you need it. There are also further online and printed guides to key aspects of finding information, so you can sharpen your information finding skills at times that suit you.

A place to study

Available 24 hours a day, with ample seating at individual study carrels or in the comfy seating area, access to a PC, printing and photocopying facilities, Library East is a light, airy place to study. If you wish to study as a group, you will find group study tables in Library West. But there are many other areas around the Castle that make fantastic study areas, including the gardens in good weather, so our books will travel with you.

Library3A larger library experience

The Library has links with the University of Sussex Library, so you can become familiar with the larger Library experience while studying at the BISC. You may borrow from their collection to supplement the resources available to you in the BISC Library and online via QUL. The University of Sussex is in Brighton and you are able to visit their library either by booking onto one of the regular minibus trips from the Castle or by taking a train to Brighton.

Becoming familiar with the Library

When you first arrive at the BISC you will learn in more detail about the services we provide. And throughout your studies you will have continual access to support in using our services and in finding the best information for your classes and assignments.

There are 3 members of the Library team, headed by the Librarian, Sarah Butler. All members of the team are able to help you in any aspect of using information.
