Living and Learning Environment

Herstmonceux Castle, the home of the Bader International Study Centre, combines the history of one of the UK’s most architecturally significant 15th century castles, with the cutting-edge learning tools of a modern university campus. Small classrooms mean that class sizes are limited, facilitating strong connections between professors and students more akin to a graduate program, and are designed to foster student success.

DryLab2019Our average size of a First Year is 18 and our average Upper Year class size is 10 students. The small class sizes also allow for dialogue and debate which help with the development of your academic skills, such as critical thinking, analysis, and effective writing.

The Castle itself holds the majority of teaching spaces on the 550-acre campus, as well as the library, dining room, social and other learning spaces, creating a collegiate atmosphere and an immersive and integrated living and learning environment.

Located in the county of East Sussex, the setting of some of England’s most important historical events such as the Norman invasion and the Battle of Britain in WWII, the beautiful campus and accessible location provide the perfect backdrop for an immersive Study Abroad experience.

Complementing Herstmonceux Castle is the newly-opened science and innovation lab, situated between the Castle and the student residence. These labs have been purpose built to provide the 21st century labs that students need and expect of a university campus and offers spaces for scientists and innovators to develop their learning.

The student residence, Bader Hall, is a 5-minute walk from the Castle and contains study spaces, meeting spaces, common rooms, a music practice room and adjoins a gym with a small sports hall, cardio and weight rooms.
