English Proficiency (UK Visas and Immigration)

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) determines who must demonstrate knowledge of English for immigration reasons based on nationality and not residency. Students on passports from countries including, but not limited to, China, South Korea, and Japan, must demonstrate knowledge of English. This includes Canadian Permanent Residents from these countries.

Students who are required to demonstrate knowledge of English for UKVI must take the IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test. This is separate from the admission process to Queen’s University.

The BISC requires a minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test, with no individual band score below 6.0.  This matches the requirement for acceptance to Queen’s University (Canada) and is higher than the minimum standard set by the UKVI for entrance to the UK. Please contact the BISC at This email address is being protected from spambots.
