We encourage you to explore all your financial options to ensure you create a financial plan to cover the costs of your time at the BISC. Still concerned about finances regarding your study abroad experience? Staff can give you advice about budgeting, bursaries, and more.

  • 01Apply for any relevant Government funding (e.g., OSAP).
  • 02Check out the available bursaries and awards. Queen’s has bursaries and awards for eligible First Year and Upper Year students. Did you know that some departments and faculties at Queen’s also have awards or that awards are offered only to students in specific programs? For example Art History offers the Harold and Helen Cave Scholarship. You can also explore other bursaries and awards - e.g. at www.yconic.com.

  • 03Lines of Credit from financial institutions. Most financial institutions offer special lines of credit for students. A Student Line of Credit offers flexible credit limits with low interest rates and easy repayment options.
  • 04Check out other banks. Never stick with your bank account just to be loyal – loyalty doesn't pay in this game! And some banks will even give you a cash incentive to switch.
  • 05Ask for money at birthdays etc. The money you receive can be put towards a once in a lifetime experience.
  • 06Plan ahead – don’t sign that rental agreement for next year just yet! Kingston has lots of housing available.
  • 07Get a job on campus. There are lots of opportunities available through the AMS and the Work-Study program at Queen's. If you can manage it, siphon off some of your income at the start of the month and put it into a savings account. If you make it to the end of the month with cash to spare, squirrel that away instead of blowing it on a quick fix.
  • 08Calculate your expenses and create a budget – and stick to it. Having a budget doesn’t mean not having fun – it means you spend what you can afford.
  • 09Cut some costs – that Starbucks every day quickly adds up. Living frugally might not seem glamorous but it’s worth it for the opportunity to study abroad!
  • 10Take a long-term view. See our “5 Reasons to Study Abroad” for how it can positively impact your future salary.
