IT Services

Read on to learn more about the basics of IT at the BISC, including logging onto the wifi, email and printing.

Connecting to the wired network

All Bader Hall rooms have an Ethernet socket if you would like to connect your device directly to the wired network via an Ethernet cable. If you need an Ethernet cable, you can buy one from the Book Stack (in the Library). Once you have connected your device to the socket, your device will automatically be assigned an IP address.

We recommend that when studying in your room you connect to the wired network rather than wireless, as it is faster and more reliable.

Connecting to the wireless network

You can connect to the wifi in most of Bader Hall and the Castle. This is designed to be supplementary to wired access.

The BISC offers three methods of connection: Eduroam, Biscsecure, and Biscwireless.

While on campus use Biscsecure as your preferred wifi connection. Login with your BISC IT account username and password. Once you have successfully joined this network your device should automatically connect when you are in range. If you have problems connecting a Windows laptop to this service please use the Biscwireless service temporarily and seek help from BISC IT.

Use Eduroam as an alternative to Biscsecure. Simply login with your Queen’s Net ID and password. Please note, you need to use your full Net ID, i.e. (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Eduroam will be available to you only if your home institution provides access, as Queen’s does.

Connecting mobile devices

There are instructions in Bader Hall Reception to help you connect Iphones, Ipads, Android or Blackberry devices to the wireless service, but if you have any problems, contact the BISC IT helpdesk (details overleaf).


  1. To print, go to the following web address http://biscstu1.queensu.ac.uk:9191​
  2. Login using your BISC username and password. 
  3. Upload a document to print by clicking on the ‘Web Print’ option on the left hand side.
  4. Choose your printer:
    1. biscstu1\badera3—computer lab upstairs in Bader Hall on A3
    2. biscstu1\baderc1 - group study space in the C1 corridor
    3. biscstu1\librarycopier - printer in the Library East
    4. biscstu1\baderreception - printer in Bader Hall reception 
  5. Select a document from your computer to print. The page displays the file formats that are allowed
  6. Click upload and your document will be sent to the printer you selected.

Topping up your print account

You are given 25 free A4 single-sided credits  per course. If you need to top up your account, please ask at Bader Reception.

Your BISC account

We have provided you with a BISC IT account. Use this to log onto the Biscsecure wifi, publicly accessible PCs in the Bader Computer Lab and Library East, and to print.

Your email

All email correspondence from the Castle community and Queen’s will go to the email address you supplied to Queen’s Admissions. Let us know if you do not receive emails, as this may indicate that there is a problem with your account. If you would like to forward all your email to another address, please ask us in IT and we will show you how to set this up.

Please check your Queen’s email regularly, otherwise you may miss important information and announcements.

The BISC Computer Lab

The BISC has a Computer Lab in Bader Hall which you access using your room key. The lab computers all run Windows and Microsoft Office, and you will need your BISC IT account username and password to access these computers. You can print direct from these PCs, and your print account will be debited.

There are two PCs located in Library East, which again you log onto with your BISC username and password, and from which you can print directly to the copier located nearby.

If your query is urgent and outside regular office hours, contact either Castle or Bader Reception and they will forward your query to the on call manager. If your query is not urgent, the Receptionist will log your query with the BISC IT helpdesk on your behalf.

We have an Internet usage policy which allows you to download/upload a maximum of 10 gigabytes per 7-day week from your laptop.
