Browsing online journals

If your professors have suggested to you that you should be regularly reading specific journal titles, you can often access these online via QUL online library. Use the Journals A-Z tab in the online library to locate specific journal titles, or use the More journal options to browse journal titles by subject.

Finding a specific journal article

If you know the exact title of the journal article you wish to download, enter it in double quotes in the search box of Summon on the QUL’s online library. Limit your search, using the filters to the left of the screen, to Items with fulltext online and Journal Article under Content Type.  If available the article should be the top result of the those returned.

Click on Fulltext online to download the article. At this point you will be asked for your NetID username and password. If you can’t remember this, please askThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in IT for advice.

Finding articles on a topic

If you don’t have specific articles in mind, but just need to find some articles to support an argument, you can search for these either in Summon or in a subject database.

Searching Summon

Enter your search terms in the search box of Summon on the QUL’s online library. Limit your search to Items with fulltext online and Journal Article underContent Type.  Articles relevant to your search topic will be returned with the most relevant at the top.

Searching a subject database

If you are unsure which subject databases are relevant to your topic you can browse a list of databases by subject either within the Databases tab of the online library under More database options, or by going to the relevant subject guide under the A-Z list of subjects.

Each database is slightly different, but in all you will be able to search for articles using the search terms you have identified.

Creating a search strategy

The more refined you make your search terms, the more likely you are to find relevant articles quickly.
