Did you know your study abroad experience is an investment in your post-university career and employability? Your experience in UK and Europe has the potential to provide you with a fresh outlook and enhanced knowledge of a career you’ve been thinking about after graduation. If your career goals are not clear, studying abroad has the potential to clarify the direction you’d like to take, give you a new perspective on your academic work and strengthen skills that will be of benefit to you when you begin your job search or go on to graduate-level study.

Research has shown that study abroad experience is important to employers when evaluating job candidates. Job applicants with international experience often standout from their peers. Today’s global marketplace demands increased adaptability, cross-cultural sensitivity, political awareness and intellectual flexibility. These skills are gained through traveling, adapting to new challenges and opportunities, and making new friends. Study abroad is a wonderful opportunity to learn adaptability and to build teamwork and human relations skills

Use these key questions and this Career Activity to help you think about and reflect upon your experience abroad. Employers need you to be able to articulate the lessons you have learned and the intercultural and interpersonal skills you have gained.

Key Questions for Reflection

  • Describe your academic experience at the BISC. How do you feel it differed from those who attended a main campus?
  • What was one of your more difficult experiences and how did you deal with it?
  • Give an example of something from your study abroad experience that has changed you and why?
  • Did you travel while at the Castle? If so, what did you find difficult and how did you handle it? What did you learn from your travels?
  • Provide an example of a time in your experience abroad when you set a goal and were able to meet or achieve it.
  • During your study abroad experience, you met many different people. How did you handle cultural difference, conflicts or differences in opinion?
  • Describe five skills you think you developed or enhanced while studying at the BISC?
