Hidden (Not so Hidden) Gem- Jina’s Sushi

University students are always looking for a good deal. Jina’s Sushi is one of those hidden (but not so hidden) gems near Queen’s University. , Japanese cuisine, namely sushi places, can get very expensive and difficult to enjoy on a student budget, but Jina’s sushi makes this possible! There are so many reasons that make Jina’s Sushi a top choice for lunch and dinner.

Convenience

There aren’t too many food options on campus, and most of the next closest food options are located on Princess St. Jina’s Sushi is an exception! It is located just a short 5-minute walk away from Stauffer and JDUC. It is located on the corner of University Ave and Johnson St., at 409 Johnson St. This makes it easy to get to even in the cold winter months. They also have relatively long hours, open from about 11:30 AM- 10 PM, Tuesday- Sunday. They are closed only on Mondays. Their schedule can be a bit unreliable during holidays though, so be sure to check on Google Maps or give them a call beforehand.

Variety

White Green Dragon Roll and Green Dragon Roll

Jina’s Sushi offers a pretty large and varied selection of different types of sushi, nigiri, sashimi, and teriyaki. One of my favourite rolls there is the white green dragon, especially because it’s not one I’ve seen anywhere else. It’s a dynamite roll (tempura shrimp and yam, avocado, cucumber, crabmeat) with avocado and crab salad on top. Yum!

I often wish that Jina’s sushi would offer all you can eat, but the number of combos and specials make up for it. They have a range of different Bento box and roll combinations so it’s easy to find something that works for your group and your appetite. Check out their menu here. They also have lunch specials before 3 PM. I usually go to Jina’s for dinner and my go-to is usually the Maki Roll Combo that comes with 48 pieces for $40! I find that this sushi boat is usually enough for 2-3 people to share.

On that note- SUSHI BOATS! Great price, great variety, very aesthetically pleasing, and perfect for sharing.

What I haven’t mentioned yet, is quality. I am probably not the best sushi critique out there, but here’s my opinion:

While Jina’s Sushi isn’t the BEST sushi you could have, I think the quality is pretty good overall. For me, the combination of the quality with the convenience, the price, the quantity, the nice ambiance, and the variety, really make Jina’s Sushi an ideal choice for lunch or dinner on any given day.
