DEVS Graduate Courses

Our program builds upon two core courses that provide the foundations of research within development studies.

All MA students take DEVS 801, Political Economy of Development (Fall term, instructor Susanne Soederberg) and DEVS 802, Cultural Politics of Development (Fall term, instructor Reena Kukreja). These reflect the basic areas of expertise within the Department and provide students with two key pillars for understanding the field of development studies.

MA students also take DEVS 850, Professional Seminar in Global Development Studies, which provides a useful forum to meet as a group to discuss how best to move through the program.  Meeting once a month across both fall and winter terms, the course provides a discussion forum addressing key themes concerning research, ethics, and debates within the discipline.

In 2021-2022, the Department offers two additional elective MA-level courses: 

  • DEVS 803: Qualitative Research Methods and Fieldwork (Winter term, instructor Bernadette Resurreccion)  
  • DEVS 811:  Social Reproduction, Care Work, and Development (Winter term, instructor Rebecca Hall)
  • DEVS 813:  Global Environmental Politics (Winter term, instructor Kyla Tienhaara)
  • DEVS 876:  Visualizing Culture (Fall term, instructor Celeste Pedri-Spade)

DEVS MA students also have the opportunity to register in DEVS 306, Cuban Culture and Society as a directed reading course. An application must be submitted to the instructor, Karen Dubinsky, in the fall term.

MA students may also enroll in up to three DEVS 86x - DEVS 87x courses, which are mixed senior undergraduate/MA-level seminars. 2021-2022 topics include development and the agro-food industry, indigenous theory, global governance, migration among others.

MA students can also select from a wide range of courses offered in cognate (related) departments (e.g., History, Political Studies, Sociology, Geography, Gender Studies and Environmental Studies) and may take up to two courses offered outside of DEVS. 

Students may also request the option to take DEVS 890: Directed Reading. This course enables a student or a group of students to explore a body of literature on a selected topic in development. The focus may be by theme, by region or by academic approach and can span the humanities, social sciences and environmental sciences. The student or students are responsible for approaching a faculty member with whom they wish to work and who is willing to undertake this project. The reading list, course schedule and course assignments will be agreed upon by the student/students and professor, but there is an expectation that a minimum of one substantive written assignment will be required.

Course-based stream MA students will take six half-credit (3.0) graduate courses in their first two semesters, choosing the three mandatory core courses (DEVS 801, DEVS 802 and DEVS 850) and three other courses that provide in-depth disciplinary material related to their project topic.

MA students considering applying to convert to the thesis-based stream should consult with the graduate coordinator and their supervisor on designing their coursework program. Students in the thesis stream must complete a minimum of four half-credit (3.0) graduate courses including DEVS 801 and DEVS 802. DEVS 850, although mandatory, cannot be considered one of the four courses for thesis-stream students. Students accepted into the thesis stream are encouraged to take six half-credit graduate courses.

Currently, graduate students are not permitted to self-enroll in courses in the Student On-Line University System (SOLUS). The Academic Programs Assistant handles all course enrollments, drops and audits.
