Biography

Mr. Chitra is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the Faculty of Law of Queen’s University.  He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and worked for the Province of Ontario for more than three decades.

This included ten years with the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Correctional Services.  Six of these were as Legal Director. Mr. Chitra subsequently worked as Legal Director of the Ontario Insurance Commission now the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario.  

In 1994 Mr. Chitra was appointed as Chair of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission. The Commission is the agency of the Province of Ontario responsible for the oversight of municipal police forces and disciplinary appeals. He held that position for 17 years. 

In 2011 he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at Queen’s University to teach part-time in the Master of Industrial Relations Program. In 2015 he was appointed as a part-time member of the Hearing Division of the Law Society Tribunal to chairing hearings into alleged professional misconduct.  

Mr. Chitra is a former Vice President and President of the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators and Council of Canadian Administrative Tribunals. These are provincial and national associations of Canadian regulatory agencies.

As well, he served for many years as Vice President and President of the Ontario Public Service Quarter Century Club. It was established in 1945 to recognize the contributions of Ontario public servants.
