The Certificate in Employment Relations (EMPR) is an academic credential designed to support those looking for a stepping stone to a career in labour relations and human resources management. It is open to both Queens’ students and anyone outside Queen’s who meets the university’s admission requirements. The Certificate in Employment Relations can be completed online.

What will I learn?

  • A broad understanding of the theory, policy and legal frameworks behind the employment relationship including: employment law, labour policy, collective bargaining and labour relations, organizational behavior, and human resources practice
  • Appropriate methods to assess workplace challenges and problems 
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills

Who can apply?

Applications are welcome from current Queens’ students or anyone outside Queen’s who meets the university’s admission requirements. The Faculty of Arts and Science Online offers several admission categories, making the Certificate in Employment Relations an accessible program to applicants from a wide range of backgrounds.

Certificate Structure

This certificate program consists of 15 units (5 courses) selected from any of the following 200-level EMPR courses. Click here to find out more.

Admission requirements

For new students, you will need ONE of the following (whichever is most recent):

  • A minimum of a 75% average on your high school diploma with ENGL4U, plus two additional 4U courses. Additional three required courses may be either 4U or 4M; OR
  • A 2-year college diploma with a minimum 2.9 GPA; OR
  • A 3-year college diploma with a minimum 2.6 GPA; OR
  • At least one full year of university with a minimum 2.6 GPA.
